This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Mining Engineer for our Tucson, AZ office. The following locations will also be considered: Denver, CO; Reno, NV and St. Louis, MO. Be involved in projects with our Mine Engineering and Stability Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
In this role you will provide senior underground mining engineering technical assistance and guidance for global projects with our Mining Engineering and Geology (MEG) Team. The successful candidate will lead in developing and supporting the MEG team through advanced technical practices and problem solving on underground projects. You will demonstrate a strong understanding of mining engineering principles to help solve complex challenges facing our surface and underground mining clients. Key to this will be supporting our efforts on public disclosure work under S-K 1300, NI 43-101 and JORC Code 2012 guidelines.
Your Impact
Perform and lead strategic modeling, design and underground hard-rock mine engineering analyses duties, including interactive hard rock underground mine design and sequencing utilizing various mine modeling software packages
Conduct and lead a full range of underground hard rock mine engineering functions, including:
Detailed mine design
Engineering trade-off studies
Cost estimation and economic analysis of alternatives
Preparation of technical documents including public disclosure documents for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves
Direct or manage large, complex, and/or multidisciplinary projects according to client-approved scopes of work, and deliver high quality reports on time and within budget
Prepare technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs in coordination with senior leads
As the technical lead, mentor and develop high performing underground hard-rock mine design and planning teams
Support both the engineering and geologic aspects of projects as necessary.
Apply WSP’s Project Management standards to manage all aspects of projects.
Work collaboratively with engineers and technical staff to develop the skills and procedures needed to effectively deliver engineering and consulting assignments.
Serve as an internal technical resource and provide guidance and mentorship to junior-level staff.
Identify, develop, and follow through on new business opportunities.
Work collaboratively with other senior members of the Global Mining team to implement the business growth strategy, develop, and maintain relationships with a broad client base
Participate in and promote a safety-first culture
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mining engineering or closely related field
A minimum of 12 years relevant post education experience in underground hard rock engineering with an emphasis on underground hard rock mine planning, design and scheduling
Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
Experience as a consulting underground hard rock mining engineer or with a technical services role in underground hard rock engineering within a mining company
Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Experience utilizing mine planning, design and scheduling software packages such as MineSight 3D, Vulcan, Deswik, Datamine, etc.
Understand the key technical requirements and deliverables required for pre-feasibility and feasibility studies related to mining and public disclosure documents (NI 43-101, S-K 1300, JORC).
Strong organizational, analytical, and strategic planning skills
Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing intricate ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with clients, regulators, project managers, and employees at all levels of the organization.
Work independently to provide guidance and leadership to mid-level to senior level team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Proficiency with technical writing, discipline-specific design software, technology, and tools.
Experienced with providing critical review of documents and preparing technical deliverables and plans with a high degree of complexity.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to prioritize responsibilities and quickly adapt to change in a pressure work environment.
Ability to travel internationally and to remote project locations

Compensation:
Expected Salary (Colorado only): $111,200 - $186,010
WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and/or offer for this position within the state of Colorado, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
