Burning Man DPW Sanitation Dispatch Assistant Manager in Reno, Nevada

JOB SUMMARY

Working with the Department of Public Works (DPW) Business Services Team, the DPW Sanitation Dispatch Assistant Manager will deliver high-level organizational support to the DPW Logistics Manager. This position will focus primarily on management of the dispatch team, fulfillment of sanitation requests, and providing customer service to various Burning Man Departments throughout the event production cycle. This role will supervise the dispatch team, giving guidance and support the team and team processes.

This role is responsible for assisting with the coordination and dispatch of portos, water tanks, shower facilities and RV pumping for staff at the Burning Man event. This position works closely with the third party vendor who performs the servicing. They will efficiently track and manage information regarding end user requests and changes, scheduling, prepare vendor dispatch sheets, delegate physical resources and provide ongoing budgeting notations for end-of-season reconciliation. 

    This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is: 

  • From July - September :  Full-Time ,  Non-Exempt , based in Black Rock City, Nevada .

    DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Documentation / Administrative Support (80%)

  • Provide sanitation support to the Sanitation Dispatch Team and DPW Logistics Manager. 

  • Perform daily administrative duties such as dispatching, calendaring, entering data, spreadsheets, and email while being flexible with others’ timelines and schedules, and also meeting Logistics deadlines.

  • Radio dispatch requests and observations regarding sanitation and trailer servicing needs

  • Answer incoming and make outgoing calls on 2-way radio regarding portos, tank filling and pumping, and shower facilities regarding placement, issues, and removal.

  • Work with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word and Excel, and any additional online tools, technology or applications specific to this role as required.

  • Maintain an office presence and upkeep equipment for information sharing: print and copy requests.

  • Deliver clear, concise and diplomatic oral and written communications.

  • Follow the standards as outlined by management. Document and capture all relevant sanitation information via radio, email, and Google Sheets.

    Personnel Management/ Support/ Leadership (15%)

  • Greet and interface with departmental representatives/leads in operational spaces.

  • Reasonably and creatively assist staff with problem-solving efforts and alternate solutions.

  • Receive inquiries, feedback, changes, and scenarios with patience and grace from a customer service lens.

  • Answer incoming and make outgoing calls on 2-way radio regarding portos, tank filling and pumping, and shower facilities regarding placement, issues, and removal.

  • Maintain the integrity of the Logistics Department by actively participating in the correct allocation of resources and assisting departments to stay within budget and timeline constraints.

  • Prepare written feedback for DPW Management describing the successes of the season, areas in need of improvement and suggestions with the purpose of improved overall efficiency for the next year; Submit an end-of-season EMBER Report.

    Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Be prepared to operate between office and field objectives on a daily basis.

  • Work with the team to plan and execute LNT and Waste disposal plans for all relevant operations.

  • Be familiar with, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.

  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic goals and managing self-care, while proactively addressing any concerns with management.

  • Participate in (Manager) Meetings when requested and maintain related correspondence via assigned Burning Man mailing lists.

  • Attend and support crew attendance to relevant Meetings and maintain related correspondence; maintain timely updates and departmental communications.

  • Perform other duties as required 

    LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.

  • Knowledge sharing – Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.

  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.

  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

      Required

  • 2 years of customer facing work experience

  • Proven creative problem-solving techniques

  • Take direction and foster a cooperative work environment; Identify tasks and initiate execution with minimal direction.

  • Ability to handle dynamic situations and proactively engage in clarifying conversations.

  • Able to integrate feedback into action, remain calm and focused under pressure or emergency situations, and maintain a professional demeanor.

  • Expert in handling data entry with an attention for accuracy; highly organized, able to prioritize, and motivated with the ability to adhere to a strict schedule.

  • Ability to work under stress and keep a cool head; capable of navigating the ebbs and flows of a shifting workload throughout day

  • Clear, service-oriented and professional communication, verbally and written; Able to evaluate, tailor style and patiently respond to needs for support.

  • Operates with a high level of behavioral integrity, confidentiality and discretion of sensitive information; maintains tidiness in work ethics and the work environment.

  • Knowledge of office machine use and maintenance.

  • Advanced user of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive), Microsoft Word and Excel. Learn, use, and routinely update any online tools, applications and documents, proactively asking clarifying questions to smooth any process or system as needed.

  • Able to maintain strong, consistent organization and tidiness in the work environment, established processes and in the handling of important information.

  • Effectively manages own time, individuals, and the efforts of the team as a whole to create an environment of accountability, collaboration, and flexibility of focus in the crew.

  • Capable of working in an extreme environment including drastic temperature changes, high winds, poor air quality and low to no visibility at times.

  • Ability to temporarily relocate to work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

    Preferred 

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

  • College, trade or vocational education or experience.

  • Water tank specs and/or plumbing fundamentals.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record

     

    COMPENSATION

    Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From July - September is $15.75 to $18.25 per hour .

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:   Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

  • On-playa:   Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
