Who will you be working with?

The Reno based distribution center is responsible for distributing locomotive parts to the western part of the United States, Canada, Australia, Asia, and Indonesia. We operate on weekdays and occasional weekends, supported by operations management and this Lead position.

How will you make a difference?

This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with both industry-specific and corporate requirements for the Wabtec Reno Distribution Center facility. The role of this position is to provide leadership and coaching to the site by creating a proactive and collaborative approach to safety and health in the workplace. This position will be visible and interacting with all employees concerning health and safety, assessing hazard conditions, and implementing practices to reduce those hazards.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Knowledge of safety and health regulations and applications.

  • Knowledge and understanding of governmental compliance including OSHA regulations, environmental compliance, industry standards and right to know compliance.

  • Experience identifying risk conditions and defining corrective actions programs.

  • Understanding of workers compensation laws and regulations at a state level.

  • Experience with facilities maintenance and building codes.

  • Professional safety certifications such as ASP or CSP.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

  • Analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work without direct supervision.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required to include the ability to provide written and verbal instructions, compile, and present business reports/correspondence, and present information clearly.

  • The ability to speak in public effectively and provide presentations to groups of employees.

  • Strong leadership, coaching skills, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.

  • Any certified training on reach trucks, order pickers, and sit-down forklift.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in environment, health and safety.

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in an operations supervisor role.

What will your typical day look like?

  • Outline and implement various training programs on site about employee safety procedures and accident prevention.

  • Ensure sound safety and health management systems are in place, anticipating, recognizing, and evaluating safety and health hazards, assisting with problem solving and monitoring and continuously improving the performance of the site’s safety and health systems.

  • Develop, communicate, and maintain safety and hazardous communication programs and systems. Oversee the effective operation and administration of these systems and programs to ensure a safe work environment and culture of zero accidents.

  • Track safety performance.

  • Lead the site’s safety initiatives.

  • Develop training programs to improvement the quality of incident investigations.

  • Develop and maintain JSA’s (job safety analysis).

  • Conduct training of various safety related programs.

  • Develop systems, procedures and processes that can be deployed to achieve an injury free workplace.

  • Assist with developing written policies and procedures for various safety programs and emergency evacuation and safety communication bulletins.

  • Identify root causes of near misses, first aids, injuries, and property damage to prevent future events of the same nature.

  • Coordinate and conduct periodic safety audits and inspections to identify and address any unsafe work practices and conditions.

  • Review all work-related injury investigation reports and ensures that identified, addressed, and corrected any hazard conditions. Verifies corrective measures have been taken to avoid any repeat accidents.

  • Oversee all training programs for supervision and employees on safety practices, fire prevention and correct handling techniques.

  • Assist operations on matters related to ergonomics and continuous improvements when new workplace projects are being developed to ensure any safety and health issues are adequately addressed prior to the startup of the process.

  • Ensure that hazard assessments are conducted, and communication requirements are implemented and followed.

  • Collaborate with human resources with the development of a safety training program to support onboarding process through site awareness training for new hired employees, including contractors, before being released into the workplace.

  • Coordinate industrial hygiene surveys including noise, ventilation, chemical and ergonomic. Analyze and interpret data and recommend elimination/reduction of potential hazards in the workplace. Coordinate employee testing (i.e. hearing conservation).

  • Design and deliver safety related communication, including signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.

  • Review all correspondence required by regulatory agencies, including OSHA reporting requirements, and any environmental reporting.

  • Oversee the administration of workers compensation program at each site, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time and cost control of workers compensation costs.

  • Review and maintain responsibility for site janitorial suppliers and programs for the facility.

  • Manage other suppliers related to site EHS to include scrap metal, hazardous materials, and associated waste removal.

  • Maintain dangerous goods expertise to provide technical and regulatory support.

  • Packaging of Hazardous Goods for shipment and required documents.

  • Monitor site EHS metrics and work cooperatively with EHS HQ on various projects and initiatives.

  • Support site personnel in understanding and complying with all environmental certifications.

  • Schedule PM of equipment and maintain documentation of required building inspections.

  • Building a positive EHS culture.

  • Accomplish goals while focusing with utmost importance on safety, maintaining high employee morale, and employee engagement.

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with cross functional leadership team.

  • Develop and implement a continuous improvement strategy to improve safety, service and quality, while reducing cycle times, costs, and in-process inventory levels

  • Lead improvement project initiatives with a Lean focus

  • Flexibility to work various shifts as needed, including occasional weekends

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
