Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Purpose of Position.

  1. The Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, installing, maintaining and improving controls systems for manufacturing automated equipment. This includes HMI Design, PLC Design, Paneling, equipment layouts and data management.

Major responsibilities and tasks of the position.

  1. Design, install, maintain and improve control systems for automated manufacturing equipment

  2. Ensure installation and commissioning meet design and operation standards integration

  3. Design HMI, PLC, Hardwire and Panel Layouts

  4. Create and/or update schematics using AutoCAD Electrical or other CAD software

  5. Troubleshoot control systems as needed electrical and neumatic

  6. Provide guidance and train less experienced team members when required

  7. Develop and/or revise internal procedures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our processes

  8. Monitoring KPIs on compliance

Knowledge and Skill Requirements.

A. Education.

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

  • M.S. in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is a plus.

B. Work Experience.

  • 2 to 4 years of experience in similar role

  • Knowledge and operation of a diversity manufacturing equipment

  • Previous experience designing and building electrical control panels.

  • Broad knowledge of industrial controls, instrumentation, panels, and automation systems for manufacturing and other process control applications

  • Previous experience with automation and control products such as VFDs, PLC/HMIs, and SCADA software (Supervisory Control and Data Aquisition)

  • Knowledge and experience with serial and Ethernet communications and protocols such as Modbus and DeviceNet

  • Ability to program PLCs using ladder logic or other programming languages.

  • Design experience using AutoCAD or other CAD software.

C. Must Have Skills.

  • Troubleshoot controls and electric systems as needed.

  • Design, install and improve control systems for automated manufacturing equipment.

  • Big data management, Queries, SQL, Power BI, OSI PI

  • SCADA management and continuous improvement

  • Programs code/parameters backup and change management

  • Equipment transfers and commissioning.

  • Fully bilingual (English / Spanish)

D. Desirable Skills.

  • Computer skills

  • Strong electrical aptitude and troubleshooting skills

  • Results driven and execution oriented

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Learn programing languages
