Overview

Communications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.

Job Description

We are seeking dynamic, creative, and resourceful communication professional to collaborate with leadership in enhancing Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's scientific reputation and engaging its over six thousand staff members in the Laboratory’s mission and priorities. The Executive Communications Specialist will work closely with the Laboratory Director (LD) and the Laboratory Director’s Office (LDO) to develop and execute communication strategies and deliverables, such as keynote presentations, speeches, and authored articles tailored to key stakeholders regionally, nationally, and internationally. The candidate will play a crucial role internally, bridging leadership and staff through clear, transparent communications and innovative engagement approaches. The ideal candidate is an adaptable self-starter with proven experience partnering with executives, thriving in a fast-paced, high-energy environment, and simultaneously managing multiple high-impact, high-visibility projects with precision in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic counsel to the LD/LDO to help inform communication opportunities and risks.

  • Develop and execute communication strategies that effectively convey the LD’s vision and key messages.

  • Lead development and execution of thought leadership campaigns.

  • Translate complex content into compelling storylines and communication products that engage a diverse set of audiences.

  • Draft and edit speeches that capture LD’s voice while tailoring messages to diverse audiences on a wide range of science-based topics.

  • Prepare talking points, scripts, and other materials for executive appearances and events.

  • Develop high-impact, visually compelling keynote presentations, working in partnership with technical staff and creative/ design teams

  • Collaborate with the PNNL social media team to plan and execute internal and external social media plans.

  • Develop content and briefing materials for internal events, including regular all-staff and manager meetings.

  • Inform, draft, edit, and oversee the distribution of LD staff communications.

  • Create and maintain content for LD/LDO’s internal and external web presences.

  • Provide communications oversight and directly support institutional events stewarded by the LDO.

  • Use metrics and insights to inform strategies and plans and continually improve the impact of leadership communications.

  • Build trust, credibility, and relationships with members of PNNL’s Leadership Team to inform LD’s communication strategy and content.

  • Collaborate with communications colleagues to align communication opportunities, share, and gather information.

  • Exercise complete discretion and maintain confidential or sensitive information.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated executive communications experience.

  • Strong ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, concise, and engaging manner.

  • Proven experience creating high-end keynote presentations with a proficiency in PowerPoint.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Proficiency in managing social media platforms and understanding of digital communication trends.

  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing metrics informed communication plans and strategies.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage competing deadlines multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, including with senior leadership, and quickly establish/maintain trust with others.

  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.

  • Flexibility in work schedule as needed to meet deadlines and demands that require support outside of core hours.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Mandatory Requirements

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle. Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. This approach is applicable to all positions, with the exception of positions governed by collective bargaining agreements and certain limited-term positions which have specific pay rules.

Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
