Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the tank farm operating contractor at the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The WRPS mission is to safely store, retrieve, and treat 56 million gallons of legacy radioactive and hazardous waste. This complex mission spans all competencies of engineering/science accomplished through a highly integrated organization engineering organization. WRPS was identified as "One of America's Safest Companies" in 2020; and was the recipient of the 2021 "Employee of the Year" by the Association of Washington Businesses.

Mechanical engineers are responsible for providing engineering support to the WRPS mission within the Engineering Organization. Duties of the mechanical engineer will typically include design, analysis, testing, fabrication, control, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of mechanical systems. This position supports the Design Engineering organization which provides multi-disciplined design support and subject matter expert (SME) capabilities.

This position includes the following responsibilities;

  • Execute design of projects that support Tank Farm operations, Effluent Treatment Facility, 242-A Evaporator and other general Hanford facilities.

  • Issue drawings, perform calculations and analyzes that support final design products, and originate equipment specifications and datasheets.

  • Perform system walk downs.

The specific engineering duties will include the following;

  • Assume responsibility for the mechanical system aspects of specific projects/scope including design, application, test, or the preparation of specifications for systems, materials, equipment or components in collaboration with other engineering/science competencies within the team.

  • Prepare technical manuals, calculations, drawings, reports, procedures and deliver technical presentations to engineering, operations, projects, and customer organizations.

  • Conduct site/area visits and investigate engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives and provide recommendations

  • Apply technical knowledge toward the reduction of the cost and improvement of systems where possible and incorporate new ideas resulting from engineering/scientific progress in the field.

  • Support preparation of scope, cost, and schedules for projects/tasks.

  • Problem-solving for technical challenges with adaptations of engineering alternatives.

  • Verify and comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.

Required Qualifications

Grade 18:

Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Eight (8) years' of related experience

Grade 19:

Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Nine (9) years' of related experience

Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 20:

Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline; and

Ten (10) years' of related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering License

  • Experience with application of Mechanical codes and standards;

  • Piping Design, ASME 31.1 and/or B31.3 piping system designs, or

  • HVAC Design, ASME AG-1, SMACNA, ASHRAE 90.1, or

  • Equipment Selection, ASME Section VIII, API 610, ASME B73.x

  • Experience in execution of design utilizing software design tools for pipe stress and flow calculations.

  • Direct experience with the use of AFT Fathom, AutoPipe, MathCAD, and Microsoft Office products.

  • Ability to lead small groups of engineers to reach a common design goal

  • Presentation and verbal communication skills

Grade 18:

Hiring Range Minimum: $104,175

Hiring Range Maximum: $131,425

Grade 19:

Hiring Range Minimum: $114,475

Hiring Range Maximum: $144,325

Grade 20:

Hiring Range Minimum: $126,025

Hiring Range Maximum: $158,87

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
