Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

The Integrative Omics (IO) group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has a Omics Scientist - Post-Translational Modifications and Applications position available for continual advancing and applying cutting-edge proteomics capabilities, especially in the areas of post-translational modifications (PTMs), including phosphorylation, acetylation, and redox modifications, and relevant environmental and biomedical applications in collaborative systems biology and predictive phenomics contexts. The IO group develops and applies cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based multi-omics technologies and methods for quantifying proteins/peptides, various PTMs, metabolites, and lipids in studies of health and disease, the environment, and general systems biology.

Expertise in quantitative proteomics, PTMs, data science or bioinformatics will be preferred. Hands-on experiences in MS-based proteomics sample preparation, enrichment for various PTMs, liquid chromatography coupled to MS (LC-MS) analysis, tandem mass tag (TMT) labeling for sample multiplexing will also be preferrable. Expertise and interests in environmental micrology and microbial community are also preferred towards environmental applications. The position requires a highly responsible individual with attention to details that will be able to function independently with limited supervision and effectively manage conflicting priorities and develop solutions to problems in a teamwork environment.

In this role, the candidate is anticipated to become a leader in advancing cutting edge capabilities on PTMs and at the same time help to advance enabling environmental and biomedical applications. The candidate is expected to maintain a strong working relationship with a diverse team of staff to accomplish long-term project goals. The candidate is also expected to contribute to or lead data analysis, interpretation, and identification of future directions. As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, the candidate will be expected to bring research to publication through collaboration with project Principal Investigators and mentoring of junior research associates and interns. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who wants to do great science and can work in large multidisciplinary teams, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to writing grant proposals. The preferred candidate would have a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, bioengineering, molecular biology, or relevant areas.

Conducts experiments on cells, tissues or model organisms to help identify causes and solutions to threatening diseases. Uses analytical and computational techniques to identify toxins such as chemicals, biological substances, and radiation, and to assess the potential exposure, risks, and harmful effects posed by them with the aim of maintaining the health of both humans and the ecosystem.
