Scope of Job

We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as a Lecturer I (non-tenure track) for a three-year (renewable annually based on favorable evaluations) position at the School of Art & Design beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.

This non-tenure-track position is scheduled to begin September 1, 2025, as a drawing and painting educator to assist our large (increasing enrollments) and already successful area into an even more promising future. This position requires close collaboration with two-dimensional teaching faculty. The candidate will play an active role in the management of drawing and painting studios.

Responsibilities (Lecturer I):

  • An ability to teach two-dimensional coursework from introductory to advanced classes and engage productively with students at all skill levels, including art foundation courses as needed.

  • Demonstrate outstanding verbal, written, interpersonal communication skills, by being conversant in the historical and contemporary movements within the field of two-dimensional studio art.

  • The applicant should have experience with the maintenance and organization of the art studio as a learning environment.

  • A working knowledge of current practice and theory of the visual arts, especially as related to drawing and painting practice.

  • A commitment to quality, student-centered education and working as a team member.

  • A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serve and mentor diverse student populations.

  • ·Teach at the BFA level as assigned by the Director of the School of Art and Design on two campuses 65 miles apart in distance as needed.

  • Engage in service to the school, college, university, community, and profession.

  • Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service and leadership, including committee work and academic support services such as portfolio reviews, student advising, and recruitment activities.

  • Participate in maintaining and building interdisciplinary collaborations.

Minimum Qualifications

Terminal degree ( MFA ) in studio art is required with at minimum 18 graduate credits in drawing and painting as well as a strong record of professional research/creative activities.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may

require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is

performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive

and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code

§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of

Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least

135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement

Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week

and at least 135 days in length.
