Job Description:

Serves as the Payments Technology point of contact and partner with senior technology and business leaders to provide technical vision and strategy aligned to achieving business goals. This role will serve as the key technical domain leader, will be able to anticipate business needs and proactively provide technical solutions as those needs arise. This role serves as a senior technology leader within the Payments Tech org and across the entire Business Technology organization. This role will lead multiple technical teams for any of the Payments Technology focus areas: Core Payments (Front End) Core Payments (Back End), Digital Payments or Pulse/Debit Payments. These teams may consist of Application Engineers, Product Owners, Testing Support and Quality Assurance staff, numerous FTE's and various Contractor/consulting/vendor staff. This role creates a culture of effective risk management, accountability, and demonstration of risk awareness across the organization and role models this culture within their organization, across Payments Technology and Business Technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Leverage in-depth expertise with technology to determine the multi-year business and technology roadmaps, evolution of tech strategy, architecture, and ensure consistent implementation of standards across Payments.

  • Leverage technical insights to drive evolving workforce needs and enable the end-to-end delivery of technology for the Payments business, and will partner with other Application Engineering and Development, Infrastructure, Risk and Architecture teams. Leverage technical expertise and practical engineering concept to assess the organizational structure and talent within the organization and take appropriate actions to hire and retain top talent.

  • Work effectively with business leaders to understand and support business imperatives and partner with them to develop, deploy and support IT solutions that maximize business value.

  • Build strong, highly productive and cohesive teams by your own contribution, professionalism and leadership; building the leadership and management potential while managing the succession planning for their department.

  • Work effectively with peers to ensure that both business needs and Business Technology objectives, performance metrics, quality measures, and budget targets are achieved.

  • Establish and managing department budget, including employee labor, contractor, offshore resources budgets, headcount trends, etc. Lead in a dynamic, fast paced, highly regulated, constantly changing Enterprise environment.

  • Prioritize investments in such a way that balances the business priorities and Discover’s broader enterprise technology goals, effectively managing the tradeoffs involved and evaluating the value created as critical input.

  • Manage the organization with Financial discipline, identifying areas for efficiency and clear rationale for investments.

  • Foster a risk-management culture where strong yet common-sense processes and governance frameworks guide behaviors; where colleagues understand “why” controls exist and take true ownership. Lead and support all internal audit and compliance issues.

  • Engage with internal and external business partners to refine requirements and strategies and lead the team to deliver and support technology solutions to meet the business goals.

  • Demonstrate technical thought leadership as an equal partner to Payments product leadership to enable new products, features and platforms to improve the customer experience in Payments and drive impact through technology (moving from technology order taker to product innovator through technology). Leverage modern engineering practices and deep product management expertise to implement consistent software development practices and methodologies in alignment with company standards; develop measures to track progress and success.

  • Maintain systems in a highly transactional environment ensuring all applications are running current, and highly available. Rebalance the employee / contractor split towards employees, such that a strong internal engineering culture is built and maintained with capability and IP retained within Discover. Leverage experiences leading programs to decompose large legacy applications to design and implement solutions in line with Discover’s technology architecture plans, leveraging public/private cloud, cloud enabled software, CI/CD pipeline, open-source technology, and advanced analytics.

  • Stay abreast of technology trends and innovations that Discover can adopt to further its position as a technology leader in financial services. Serve as the liaison, and POC to the outside technical vendor community who support us.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering or Business Administration and Management.

  • 12+ years of experience in application development, computer systems, software development, programming or platform development.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering or Business Administration and Management.

In Lieu of education:

  • 15+ years of application development, computer systems, software development, programing, or platform development.
