Summary:The CNC Mill Set-Up Operator is responsible for the safe operation and set up of a wide variety of Computerized Numerical Control Machining Centers (CNC) or other production machines using programs and tooling that have been previously used to manufacture a product and is capable of doing this with little supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Must work with Management to debug and optimize manufacturing processes for jobs or machines which they are responsible.

  • Must demonstrate a very high level of competency with all types of metal working equipment, both manual and CNC.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to debug machining processes and communicate those processes for manufacturing.

  • Must be able to diagnose process problems and determine the cause of the problem.

  • Must be able to implement corrective action to prevent reoccurrence of problems.

  • Must be aware of the budget and delivery requirements for work assigned to them and report to management any difficulties that would cause the cost of the work to exceed budget or miss a scheduled delivery.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of safe operation of metal working equipment, including but not limited to starting and stopping the machining cycle, interrupting the machine cycle, performing offsets to tool length and diameter and restarting the machining cycle.

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of CNC program code and be able to document and perform edits of the code to enhance machining processes.

  • Installs machining fixtures and tooling using Tool Sheet and Setup instructions with no supervision.

  • Orients fixtures and tools to machine coordinate systems, inputs machine, fixture and tool offsets.

  • Loads appropriate CNC program into machine control.

  • Loads material into holding fixtures, following verbal and/or written instructions.

  • Produces “first piece” from setup while observing machining cycle to prevent damage to work piece, tooling, machine or injury to operator.

  • Must be able to read, understand and interpret blueprints and specifications, including GD&T.

  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.

  • Performs a variety of inspection and gaging operations to insure maintenance of quality standards and specifications and have the ability to record the results of these inspections.

  • Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.

  • Must be able to train CNC Operators in the safe operation of the machines that they have set up.

  • Cleans machine, tooling, and parts as instructed.

  1. Performs daily preventative machine maintenance as instructed.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Communication Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, mechanical drawings and specifications. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Math Ability:

Ability to add and subtract four-digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of measurement, volume, and distance. Basic understanding of Geometry and Trigonometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in situations requiring a high level of judgment and reasoning.

Computer/Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrate competency on a wide variety of machines and controls.

Salary Description

$20 - $32/hour (depending on experience)
