Job Description

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for providing strategic leadership and program management for the environmental program(s) assigned to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, corporate policies, standards, and guidelines, and site-specific requirements. The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will report to local site management and collaborate closely with appropriate site, business, and corporate environmental leaders.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide support for air, water, waste and other environmental regulatory and internal program requirements based on the specific needs of the site.

  • Create and maintain environmental management systems to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, site permits and corporate standards.

  • Lead environmental performance continuous improvement efforts.

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation and submission of all required reporting to federal, state and local agencies.

  • Identify, interpret and review EHS legal and other requirements, and implement programs/procedures to ensure compliance.

  • Lead or support preparation and negotiation of permit applications.

  • Optimize water and wastewater treatment systems. Continuous Improvement of Site waste management system.

  • Complete environmental regulation applicability determinations (i.e., RCRA, Title V)

  • Lead or work with site(s) teams on efforts to ensure compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements, site(s) procedure development and updates, routine and non-routine activities such as environmental impact assessments of site(s) projects or process changes.

  • Interface with regulatory agencies, prepare required documentation, schedule any required testing and provide additional follow-up documentation as required.

  • Lead or participate in investigation of environmental incidents, implement system improvements to reduce potential for future events, and record environmental deviations in the IFF Incident Tracking System.

  • Lead and participate in 1st party environmental audits and coordinate site(s) 2nd party environmental audits.

  • Lead changes to site programs as required by changes to environmental regulations.

  • Act as site(s) representative during audits by or other interactions with federal and state environmental agencies and respond to requests or notifications from environmental agencies.

  • Site Sustainability Leader, coordinating and submitting monthly reporting.

  • Develop Site Strategy in meeting Corporate Sustainability initiatives (GHG reduction, Zero-Waste to Landfill, Water Impact Reduction)

  • Participate/Lead Green Team initiatives.

  • Assist site in reviewing/sourcing sustainable waste disposal options as needed.

  • Complete universal Waste and Hazardous Waste area inspections.

  • Represent environmental issues in community interactions.

  • Site contact for external agencies (i.e. stormwater inspection, ISO recertification audit)

  • ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System (EMS) Core Process Owner.

  • Develop and deliver environmental training.

  • Air permitting/modification as needed with external support (COE or external).

  • Refrigerant Management – Annual 1PA, update Refrigerant Management Plan SOP as needed, update refrigerant inventory.

  • Participate on appropriate US Cluster environmental competency team(s).

Job Requirements

  • BS or higher degree in chemical or environmental engineering, environmental science, or related discipline is required.

  • At least 3 or more years of environmental experience in a manufacturing environment is desired.

  • Demonstrated functional/technical expertise in a competency area is required for a Specialist role.

  • Demonstrated functional/technical expertise and moderate level of experience in multiple environmental competencies such as air, water/wastewater, and waste.

  • Attention to details is important.

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements is advantageous.

  • The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision. Additionally, the successful candidate will be one who can deal with fast changing and sometimes conflicting priorities and who possesses strong organization and planning skills.

  • Strong networking skills and interpersonal relations are all important.

  • Broad knowledge of environmental topics is advantageous (RCRA, SPCC, SWPPP, EPCRA 311/312/313, TSCA, process ventilation, and air emissions)

  • Demonstrated written and oral skills are essential. Knowledge of computer software such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint plus the ability to quickly learn the use of new and varied computer-based systems is required.

  • Familiar or experience with DCS control and DCS historian systems is beneficial.

Compensation ($65,000 - $80,000) is based on a variety of factors including but not limited to work experience, skills, certifications, and location.
