The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
Regularly provides routine technical support for research activities and/or laboratory support. Applies full range of experience and previous job knowledge; frequently adapts procedures, techniques, tools, materials, and/or equipment to meet specialized needs. Assists with the design of new experiments, multimedia sampling, maintenance, operation and calibration of scientific monitoring equipment for research projects. Responsible for general data collection and assisting with analysis, recruiting participants, and may support and assist other technicians.Schedule 8 AM-5 PM; OCC WKNDS/HOLS Responsibilities Responsibilities. Performs non-routine laboratory assignments involving some complexity. PI and senior laboratory staff will provide written and/or oral directions on an as needed basis. The position will require the ability to maintain complex mouse strains and use excel based datasheets to manage a large mouse colony. The position will require the ability to maintain mammalian cell cultures and maintenance of cell culture rooms and procedures. Typical Duties - Weans mice and records litters several times a week - Performs genotyping for mouse strains, individual crosses could include up to 3-4 different genotyping protocols. - Maintains a web based experimental animal database. This includes using the database to set up experimental crosses. - Ultimately, becomes the lead manager of the experimental animal database. - Harvests tissues samples for histology and molecular biology (e.g. westerns and real-time PCR). - Performs standard laboratory histological techniques, including immunohistochemistry on fresh frozen and paraffin embedded tissue. - Sets up timed mattings for embryonic analysis. - General laboratory management and ensuring compliance with all UCAR and laboratory safety rules. - Performs routine ocular exams on experimental animals (fundus imaging, slit lamp exam, IOP measurements). - Meticulously documents all relevant laboratory activity in a lab notebook or appropriate computer system. - Orient new lab members and students to the procedures of the laboratory. - Uses Microsoft excel to execute and track weekly workflow of animal experiments. - Lab administration including ordering supplies and tracking activity with vendors, maintaining well organized stocks and inventories of reagents, consumables, primers, antibodies and chemicals. - Assists the PI in all things lab-related, manages the budget under the supervision of the PI, and communicates with University offices, administrators and managers as needed. - Will instruct students and visiting scientists on the appropriate SOPs relevant for the lab. Qualifications. Associate's degree in appropriate discipline plus 2 to 3 years specialized experience in related field; equivalent combination of education and experience; or a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Training will be provided in laboratory skills and on how to perform an ocular exam on experimental animals, however, at least 1-2 years' experience working with experimental animals is required. MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) preferred, particularly use of excel or access. Must be able think independently, maintain meticulous records and have good judgment about when to seek advice from others when there is a problem.
