University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

Position Summary:

A Technician III position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Chike Cao in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research, the Department of Othopaedics at University of Rochester Medical Center. The job consists of laboratory work using complex genetic mouse models, cell culture systems and molecular biology techniques to understand bone and tendon biology and healing. This position requires some prior experience with mouse handling (mating, weaning, etc.), mouse recovery surgery (flexor tendon repair), tissue harvest and sample processing (preparation of mouse tissues for histology and biomechanical analyses), molecular biology skills (PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, etc.), cell culture skills (mammalian cell culture, transfection), experience in data analysis/interpretation, excellent organizational skills, and careful attention to detail. Hours of the position are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday (flexible), work on limited weekends may be required.

Specific Responsibilities:

1) Breed, maintain, and genotype mice for multiple projects within the lab and keep detailed electronic inventory records of the mouse colonies. (20% effort)

2) Perform surgical procedures such as the flexor tendon injury and repair model for the support of ongoing research projects. (20% effort)

3) Dissection of mouse bone, tendon and hindlimb tissues, sectioning of paraffin or frozen tissues, histological staining, histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization of samples for ongoing research projects. (20% effort)

4) Dissection of mouse bone, tendon and hindlimb tissues for biomechanical testing for ongoing research projects. (20% effort)

5) Isolation and analysis of RNA and protein from cell cultures and bone or tendon repairs via real time quantitative PCR and Western blotting, respectively. (10%)

6) Maintenance of a detailed lab notebook with experimental detail, methods, data compilation and data analysis and interpretation included. (10%)

Requirements:

Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related filed; or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Prior experience in the mouse model or developmental biology is preferred.

Additional specific training will be provided. This position offers mentoring opportunities and opportunities for co-authorship on published manuscripts. Pay Range

Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
