University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

General Purpose:

This position requires active participation in research laboratory activities. This individual will participate in basic science laboratory procedures including routine experiments using both cell culture and transgenic mouse models of erythropoiesis. Research will require experience with cell culture, mouse breeding/genotyping, FACS analyses, polymerase chain reaction, cloning techniques, tissue culture procedures, and fluorescent antibody detection. This position will involve handling mice and analyzing erythropoiesis in both embryos and adult animals.

The technician must be able to work in a collaborative environment and must be comfortable working with mice. Results from these experiments will be used in both publications and grant proposals.

Responsibilities:

Animal Procedures

  • Maintain and organize mouse colonies

  • Perform genotyping

  • Assist in analyzing the erythroid phenotype of transgenic mice and embryos (training provided)

  • Generate DNA, RNA, and protein from sorted populations of cells.

Cell culture

  • Culture mouse and human erythroblasts, including monitoring of cultures using benzidine and trypan counts

  • Assist in shRNA knockdown by running qPCR or Western blots

  • Assist in Crisp genome editing experiments through genotyping

  • Analyze cultures using flow cytometric analyses

Research Laboratory Procedures

  • Organizing the work stations with the necessary supplies, including assembling any necessary plastic ware

  • Cell staining and counting for flow cytometry experiments

  • Routine cleaning of instrumentation and work area per protocol

  • Restocking of work station supplies

  • Performing routine laboratory analyses including (but not limited to) RT-PCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, cell culture, and microscopy.

Participate in lab meetings and journal clubs. Keeping current in the field through pertinent seminars and literature. Laboratory management procedures such as ordering supplies, adhering to regulatory policies, maintaining certifications and training, and troubleshooting workflow problems.

Help to train and assist new student employees, potentially in research lab procedures, data entry and checking, and stocking supplies.

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in appropriate discipline plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

BS/BA in biological/physical science or equivalent experience is preferred.

A minimum of 1-year experience in laboratory science desired. Individuals with experience in handling mice and/or cytometry are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of University policy and procedures is desirable. Must have reliable/efficient transportation.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.92 - 29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
