University of Rochester Lead Child Life Specialist in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

In partnership with child life management team, the Lead CLS will assist in the process to ensure clinical competency and accountability among child life staff. They will supervise and mentor a team of professionals by providing an environment that facilitates professional growth, effective communication, and a team focus. They will ensure staff are trained and compliant with hospital and department policies and processes. Serves as a team lead and backup for Child Life Program Director.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a direct care Child Life Specialist in a unit-based assignment

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Supports and provides recommendations for recruiting, orientation, and performance evaluations. Provides guidance to staff about HR policies and guidelines. Improves staff performance through ongoing mentoring, feedback when necessary, and other HR functions. Develop plans to improve and sustain employee engagement for all staff.

  • Models and holds child life staff accountable to meet the ICARE values. Supports a positive work environment and provides leadership for program adherence to policy and procedures. Key responsibilities include performance evaluations.

Program Development:

  • Supports implementation of department strategic planning in line with hospital goals.

  • Assist program director in implementing change identified through performance improvement activities and evidence-based literature specific to the discipline of Child Life. Working with program director to design and oversee projects intended to address performance improvement needs.

  • Ensures the participation of the Child Life Department in the quality and safety initiatives in Golisano Children’s Hospital, as well as development of service or hospital wide policies/procedures and practice guidelines. Participates in service or hospital committees/taskforces. Represents child life department on committee/workgroups.

Professional Development:

  • Serves as a mentor for the CAS (Career Advancement System), as well as provides information on staying current in the profession and maintaining certification requirements.

  • Provides and facilitates one educational presentation per year on a child life service specific project.

  • Leads/co-leads teams that results in improved practice / patient outcome or is an active member of a project team.

  • Assumes primary responsibility for the department in the absence of the program manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in area related to Child Growth and Development required

  • Master’s Degree preferred

  • 5 years relevant experience or equivalent education and experience required

  • Demonstrates strong communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills. Must have the ability to collaborate with team members and families to ensure best outcomes. Demonstrate strong leadership skills required

  • Child Life Professional Certification must be earned within 1 year required

  • Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 57,595 - $ 80,600 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
