University of Rochester Research Technician II in Rochester, New York

POSITION SUMMARY :

This full-time position will be supervised by Drs. Hengwei Zhang and Lianping Xing. The technician’s primary duties will include small animal care and handling, as well as laboratory and bioinformatic data organization and analysis. Additionally, (s)he will receive training in various biomedical research areas including molecular biology, cellular biology and histology. (S)he will be responsible for supervising and training of new comers in the laboratory. Her role will also involve assisting with the daily operations of the research lab, and supporting Dr. Zhang in grant writing and publication activities.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

  • Lab Tech. II reports to Drs. Hengwei Zhang and Lianping Xing. Generally, works closely with other experienced members in the laboratory or cooperated research laboratory. Some independence with performing experiments and record keeping is essential.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

  • High-performance desktop installed with bioinformatic analysis software, such as Seurat and IPA, Western blot, ChemiDoc Imagers (Bio-rad), Real-time PCR, fluorescent microscopy.

Required Experience :

  • Laboratory and bioinformatic data analysis and basic research experience are required. Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques is required. Familiar with all standard office equipment such as telephones, PC’s, printers, calculator, copier, and fax machines.

Preferred but not required :

  • Small animal care and handling, flow cytometry, cell culture.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Small animals (mouse) care and handling (i.e. breeding, weaning, genotyping, recording). (25%)

  2. Laboratory (i.e. histology, PCR, immunostaining) and bioinformatic (i.e. RNAseq, scRNAseq, proteomics) data organization (collection, storage, sorting, backup) and analysis. (25%)

  3. Assist in others’ research experiments or performs some experiments independently (25%)

  4. Assist with the daily operations (i.e. supply ordering, equipment maintenance, lab inspection). (15%)

  5. Assist in developing, devising or modifying methods and procedures. (5%)

  6. Train and supervise the experiment performance of new comers. (5%)

OTHER RESPONSIBILITES

  1. Good attendance record.

  2. Adherence to all University, Division and Department policies.

  3. Adherence to all laboratory safety procedures.

  4. Participates in laboratory meetings.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED and 1-year experience performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities, compiling and collecting data and preparing reports. required

  • Associate's degree Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and scientific methods required

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 19.37 - $27.12 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
