University of Rochester Sonographer 2, Sr, Cardiology in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs a variety of technical procedures in the application of high frequency ultrasound waves to patients for diagnostic purposes. Demonstrates proficiency in complex transthoracic and stress echocardiography that is seen with structural and heart failure programs. Uses highly skilled techniques to assist in clinical decision making.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs routine and specialized independent echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic techniques, transesophageal and contrast exams as needed at all outpatient facilities within the UR Medicine enterprise.

  • Applies independent judgement during the exam to ensure appropriate anatomical, pathological and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the exam images per current URMC Echocardiography Policies and Procedures. Perform the necessary cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and image acquisition/storage to support the interpreting physician of the finalized diagnostic report.

  • Demonstrates radiation safety competency to perform ASA, Pericardiocentesis and ICE procedures under the supervision of an echo attending or an interventional Cardiologist in the Cath Lab.

  • Obtains pertinent patient history to optimize the exam for appropriateness. Reviews old echocardiographic studies for correlation. Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to perform cardiac ultrasound studies in accordance with universal precautions to insure patient safety per approved protocols, policies and procedures. Communicate with the patient in a manner that is appropriate for patient understanding,

  • Obtains vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight. Evaluates any contraindications that may be limiting to exam completeness. Use of proper patient positioning along with ergonomically correct scanning techniques to insure patient and sonographer comfort and safety.

  • Assist with the education and training of cardiology fellows and student interns. When applicable, participate in research echoes with differing protocols and specific credentialing.

  • Maintains active registry status in adult cardiac sonography (RDCS/RCS) through continuing professional educational credits. Attends echo conferences offered at URMC and/or attends local and national Echocardiography/Cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge base. Maintains active status in BLS (Basic Life Support).

  • Keeps lab and exam rooms in clean, working order, including cleaning ultrasound equipment and transducers according to lab policy. Troubleshoots and reports all equipment malfunctions and problems to lead sonographer. Keeps all inventory and supplies current and stocked in each exam room.

Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree required,

  • 2 years of experience in cardiac imaging or related field required,

  • 1 year of independent clinical echocardiographic scanning experience in a hospital and/or outpatient environment required,

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required

  • Working knowledge of cardiology, cardiovascular hemodynamics, doppler physics/instrumentation, cardiac and vascular ultrasound technologies required. Must be compliant with UR Radiation Safety Standards required.

  • RDCS/RCS certification required,

  • RVT certification preferred,

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 32.02 - $ 44.81 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
