University of Rochester Technical Associate I in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides direct research support at the professional entry level. Under general guidance and with latitude for exercising independent technical judgment, performs research related activities limited in scope and complexity in a specialized field.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The laboratory projects focus on understanding gene regulation and protein function in Type III Secretion System positive Vibrio cholerae . The position will involve DNA cloning and associated procedures, bacterial strain construction, reporter assays (including but not limited to beta-galactosidase assays), co-culture of bacteria using mammalian cell culture (and associated techniques for cell culture maintainance) and cell line-based experiments such as LDH. qRT-PCR and other RNA-based assays and experiments will also be conducted to validate transcriptional profiling data. The position requires the individual to design, conduct, and interpret the results of experiments using standard laboratory methods. The individual will use resources such as primary literature and technical manuals for both experimental design and solving technical problems.

  • Works independently with only occasional suggestions in modifying, varying or adapting protocols to troubleshoot existing experiments and develop protocols for reporter assays to detect and measure output of V. cholerae interactions with mammalian cells.

  • Teaches basic laboratory techniques, primarily DNA cloning and bacterial strain manipulation, and instrumentation procedures to students and laboratory technical support staff, and counsels them on technical problems.

  • Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading professional journals, presenting at and attending lab meetings.

Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in field of assignment required.

  • Masters degree in Microbiology or related field preferred.

  • At least 1 year of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers

  • or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Must be proficient in basic microbiology and molecular biology techniques. Must also complete all required safety training associated with lab required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $37,000 - $64,100 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
