General Description

Employees in this position are responsible for coordinating the use, application, and maintenance of various types of computer equipment, technology, and systems. These employees are assigned to a single department, bureau, or division. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level employee. Related work is performed as required.

This is a Competitive Class position. The individual selected to fill this vacancy will be given a provisional appointment and will be required to participate in the next Civil Service Examination for this title.

A qualified applicant may be provisionally appointed and serve in the position until a Civil Service Examination is administered and an appropriate eligible list can be established to make a permanent appointment in accordance with the Civil Service Rule of Three. CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE.

Typical Work Activities

  • Develops applications and uses for available technology based on the specific needs and mission of the work unit;

  • Researches new products and system upgrades based on the needs of the work unit and recommends relevant software and equipment purchases;

  • Oversees the use, operation, application, and maintenance of the technology base for the work unit;

  • Develops methods, procedures, and approaches to maximize the utilization of technology and systems to improve workflow within the work unit;

  • Services as a liaison with the Information Technology Department to coordinate access, usage, and security for work unit;

  • Develops customized reports using software tools and demonstrates how to retrieve information from systems;

  • Trains staff in the proper operation and use of assigned technology;

  • Works with vendors on system repairs, upgrades, and integration with new systems;

  • Develops procedure manuals for the operation of software and systems;

  • Troubleshoots hardware, software, and equipment problems for assigned work unit, offering solutions, and making needed repairs;

  • Maintains appropriate systems documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED AND

  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Technology, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or closely related field.
