POSITION DESCRIPTION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction; operates medium and heavy construction/maintenance equipment; performs skilled and
semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and operation of the Salina municipal solid waste landfill; services
and makes minor repairs to equipment.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
o Operates compactors, dozers, motor graders, front-end loaders, self-propelled scrapers and similar
equipment at the municipal solid waste landfill and in various assignments.
o Moves, levels, compacts and covers solid waste; assists in the planning to fill cells.
o Looks for and prevents hazardous waste from entering into landfill; extinguishes fires at landfill.
o Welds, services & makes repairs to equipment; performs maintenance checks on equipment.
o Maintains landfill roads; mows grounds; collects litter.
o Prepares minimal records of own activities, including burial logs and special wastes.
o Performs overtime as required and performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:
Occasionally acts as lead operator for a new employee.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:
o High school diploma or G.E.D.
o One (1) year of progressively responsible construction and maintenance work operating light and medium
equipment (tractor, loader, skid steer).
o One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment (dozer, compacter, earth scraper).
o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license at hire.
o Must possess a valid Kansas commercial drivers license (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsements, or
ability to obtain within one (1) year from the start date of employment.
The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and pay hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training
at Salina Area Technical College.

Apply and maintain knowledge of the current methods, equipment, materials and tools to effectively maintain
and operate a municipal solid waste landfill facility. (Daily)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently,
and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Climbing/Balancing: Climb inclines, uneven surfaces, balance required.
Walking: Moderate amount required.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS USED:
Earth scrapers, trash compactors, wheel loader, motor grader, dozer, water truck, roll off truck, tractor mower,
weed-eaters, mechanics hand and power tools, welder, etc.
