Job Summary

This position reports to the Assistant Dean of the Career Development Office ( CDO Dean) and works closely in all aspects of operating the Career Development office ( CDO ) as set forth below, including executive, strategic, operational, and administrative decision making and oversight.

The position involves directing and overseeing numerous programs, initiatives, and efforts, often simultaneously, while maintaining the strategic vision of the CDO Dean. The position is central to the success of the office, both in terms of day-to-day operations and in achieving long-term objectives. The position will advise on numerous matters, both internal and external, essential to the success of the office. This position has the primary day-to-day responsibility for managing the operations of the CDO . This position helps oversee student and alumni counseling, student and alumni employment data collection, and program creation and execution. The position assists and advises the CDO Dean in establishing the budget for the organization to carry out its mission, and tracking expenditures and performance of same. The position is involved in extensive outreach to stakeholders, establishing and cultivating strong relationships to provide extensive employment opportunities for students and alumni, increase the brand of the schools, and in support of other units within the school. This position ensures continuity and quality customer service between internal College of Law departments, university departments, the legal community, students, and other stakeholders. This position actively participates in outreach to the bench and bar, including membership and participation in relevant bar or other organizations, and participates in donor development related activities as needed.

Responsibilities

  1. Executive Management: Assists CDO Dean in the development of a budget, supervises expenditures, and maintains fiscal records; reviews and signs-off on in-office budget reports as authorized by the CDO Dean; provides supervision and training of Career Development staff (including CDO Program Manager, Student Fellow & Administrative Assistant); signs off on timesheets for staff bi-monthly; helps track trends and changes in the local and national legal economy; identifies employment trends, challenges, and opportunities through data analysis to improve employment outcomes for students and alumni. Supervises CDO office in CDO Dean’s absence serving as the CDO Dean’s proxy and making decisions where needed in his absence or in consultation with him. Attending internal and external meetings were requested to represent the CDO to associated stakeholders. Establishes internal objectives and implements procedures to meet goals. Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing student, client and stakeholder feedback and concerns. Provides appropriate follow-through to ensure quality customer service.

  2. Program Management & Design: Plans, coordinates and conducts topical and innovative programming and networking events throughout the year; utilizes and calls on area attorneys and alumni to serve as panelists and hosts for programs and events; presents at job seeking and professional workshops to large groups of students on topics such as application materials, legal hiring & interviewing and succeeding in legal (and non-legal) positions.

  3. Career Counseling : Meets regularly with law students from 1L, 2L & 3L classes, and the Masters of Legal Education ( MLS ) program, as well as alumni of the forgoing, to provide career counseling and support; assists them in identifying their individual career goals; connects students with alumni mentors; fosters connections between students and employers; counsels students on legal trends and provides guidance on how to navigate them; provides career advising on the job-search process, and guidance and advice on sensitive work-related issues; assists students and alumni in the creation of legal resumes, cover letters and other application materials; administers mock interviews; develops and creates materials related to the job search process and professionalism, through the use of in-person, video, written and other form of communication, and delivered by various mediums.

  4. Employer Outreach & Support: Develops contacts with external organizations to expand employment opportunities for students and alumni; oversees customer service to S.J. Quinney College of Law & Alumni for the CDO , manages and executes Fall & Spring On-Campus Interview/recruiting seasons with high level of customer service, develops relationships with existing employers and seeks out new sources of jobs for students, including amongst alumni and with new law firms, government, and business relationships; hosts large-scale career fairs annually, including the Public Interest &Government Career Fair and Law Firm Fairs.

  5. Employment Tracking & Data Reporting: Collects and maintains student and graduate employment records; ensuring timely submission of employment reports to external entities including U.S. News & World Report, American Bar Association, and National Association for Law Placement.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Utah State Bar licensed preferred plus, six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

The incumbent must be proficient in making daily operational decisions in assigned area to ensure compliance of current regulations and guidelines
