State of Utah - Jobs Journey Diesel Mechanic - Prep Shop in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a skilled and motivated person to perform mechanic duties including inspecting,diagnosing,adjusting overhauling,and repairing vehicular equipment,heavy equipment and all gasoline,diesel equipment in the Prep Shop. Principal Duties In this position you will:

  • Perform all mechanic duties including inspecting,diagnosing,adjusting overhauling,and repairing vehicular equipment,heavy equipment and all gasoline,diesel,hydraulic or cable operate equipment repaired in the shop.
  • Install after market truck equipment and safety equipment.
  • Use basic automotive electrical knowledge to wire in add on equipment.
  • Perform cutting,welding and brazing as needed; may do minor body work.
  • Inspect repaired or prepped equipment to ensure proper repair or prep has been accomplished.
  • Operate tools necessary to perform the duties including pneumatic tools,power tools,hand tools and test equipment.
  • Perform necessary paperwork to properly account for parts and labor used on each job.
  • Select and order repair parts.
  • Complete paperwork (time cards,work orders,etc.).
  • Safely operate fork lifts,and vehicle lifts. 
  • Maintain equipment records,read and interpret parts and repair manuals.
  • Use tire mounting equipment,make brake system repairs,and perform minor engine and drivetrain repairs. 

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have: 

  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days.
  • A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days.
  • At least 4 years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
  • Your own full set of mechanics tools.
  • Have great attention to detail. 

This position may be filled at the Journey Auto Worker level for applicants that don't meet the qualifications listed above in the Ideal Candidate section. The hourly rate for the Journey Auto Worker is $21.17. Preference may be given to those with all around mechanical abilities.

Knowledge,Skills,& Abilities Here are some of the knowledge,skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job,though not all-inclusive:

  • Ability to communicate effec tively with customers,vendors,and fellow workers.

  • Knowledge of heavy equipment,mechanical operation.

  • Knowledge of methods of repairing cars,trucks and other automotive equipment; proper repair,maintenance,servicing and record-keeping of automotive equipment

  • Knowledge of mechanical tools and modern diagnostic testing equipment

  • Methods used in a program of preventative maintenance to heavy equipment.

  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment repair equipment.

  • Knowledge of basic electrical systems and installation of aftermarket equipment.

  • Ability to assist other mechanics with repairs.

  • Ability to pass certification tests and perform safety inspections when required

  • Principles,theories and practices of automotive repair and/or collision repair techniques

  • Maintain inventory; track receipt,sending and delivery of materials

  • Use and maintain a variety of hand tools

  • Skills in using parts manuals and online search tools

  • *Physical Requirements: *Strenuous - The work requires considerable a d strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing,lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds,crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • *Working Conditions: *Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment,e.g.,working around operating machines,working with contagious diseases or chemicals,etc.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
