State of Utah - Jobs Veterinarian in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

Job Title:  Field Veterinarian Job Description: The Animal Industry Division of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food is looking for a field veterinarian to work in the Animal Health Program to prevent and control animal diseases as well as with the Meat and Poultry Inspection program to assure wholesome products for consumers at state-inspected slaughterhouses.  This position will be approximately 80% animal health duties and 20% meat inspection duties. Principal Duties: As a Field Veterinarian,you will:

  • Review,apply,and enforce the laws,regulations,and policies of the Department.
  • Act as a liaison between UDAF,other state and federal agencies,veterinarians,and animal owners on issues involving zoonotic and reportable diseases.
  • Work with industry and other state,national,and international organizations in the development of disease control methods,testing protocols,management practices,and educational materials.
  • Complete required inspections,tasks,and reports in a timely manner.
  • Investigate and manage reportable animal diseases and zoonotic diseases.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal law for animal movements,disease response,exhibitions,and Animal Industry programs.
  • Coordinate with other Animal Industry programs as needed to enhance animal disease traceability and disease prevention/preparedness.
  • Perform ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections on animals and carcasses at state slaughterhouses.
  • Inspect slaughterhouses for compliance with applicable state and federal rules,regulations,policies,and procedures.
  • Work with all animal species humanely.

The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will possess: 

  • Experience in clinical veterinary medicine.
  • A current Utah veterinary license and USDA Category II accreditation.
  • A valid Utah driver s license (or the ability to obtain one) and a safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of various disease control and eradication programs (e.g. rabies,trichomoniasis,brucellosis).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
