Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) seeks a bilingual paralegal to provide support to domestic violence/family law attorneys litigating in state court. The paralegal will conduct trauma informed intakes for survivors of family violence, draft pleadings, discovery, and correspondence, maintain case files, and communicate with courts, counsel, and clients. In this position, the paralegal will work closely with attorneys, social workers, and other staff to provide quality legal assistance to survivors of family violence, stalking, and sexual assault. PARALEGAL A

  1. The primary duties and activities of a Paralegal A may include the following and any other case-related activities and duties consistent with assisting attorneys in the practice of law:

  2. Conduct eligibility and substantive interviews using trauma informed methods in English and Spanish in person or by telephone, which interviews may at times take place outside the regular office setting;

  3. Assess potential clients for eligibility for services and provide referrals, including those ineligible for services;

  4. Conduct client-centered interviews;

  5. Follow-up on assigned cases, including investigating facts and researching law;

  6. Provide interpretation, which may at times take place outside the regular office setting, and interpretation of documents;

  7. Prepare legal documents and correspondence and obtain client signatures on legal documents;

  8. Work collaboratively with the Domestic Violence/Family attorneys and social workers focused on meeting the legal needs of survivors;

  9. Assist attorneys with legal casework including issuing subpoenas or other service, contacting witnesses, and coordinating witness interviews;

  10. Attend hearings to provide litigation support, as needed;

  11. Notarize legal documents;

  12. Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into client database and other requirements;

  13. Attend and participate in outreach events, meetings, and trainings virtually and throughout our service area related to domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault to conduct intakes, build relationships with other organizations and provide information on TRLAs services;

  14. Follow all procedures to ensure that such information is available to the appropriate casehandlers on a timely basis.

  15. Prepare administrative reports required by TRLA and funders;

  16. Any other duties required by the branch or team manager.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  2. Strong writing and communications skills with attention to detail and follow-through.

  3. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 including Word and Excel.

  4. Highly motivated, organized, and able to handle several tasks at once

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in litigation support.

  2. Experience with interpretation and/or translation.

  3. Experience working with trauma survivors and/or underserved communities.
