Job Summary and Primary Responsibilities
As a Manager on our Development team, you'll be responsible for ensuring successful end results as related to designing medical devices relevant to spine surgical procedures, in accordance to ISO, ASTM, and FDA regulations. You’ll define the roles and responsibilities of your team and create plans for the department’s future needs and operations. You’ll regularly interface with design surgeons, Marketing, Regulatory, Quality, and other functional groups, to design and develop devices and oversee projects from inception to product launch.
You will be responsible for the development of innovative mechanical solutions to meet patient and surgeon needs from concept to commercialization. This requires leading cross-functional teams to manage the product development process, project timeline, and deliverables to ensure designs are safe and effective for clinical use as well as directly managing and developing mechanical engineers on the team.
Manages, mentors and guides a team of engineers and related projects to ensure on-time and on-budget commercialization of medical devices
Participates in and guides project planning, design and phase reviews, mechanical design, technical assessments, and design control documentation
Collaborates with surgeon design and marketing teams to identify unmet clinical needs and distill them into product requirements
Creates and interprets advanced mechanical designs using CAD software suitable for subtractive, additive, sheet metal, and injection molding manufacturing methods while applying DFX principles
Guides, reviews, and approves documentation relevant to design control, test plans (verification and validation), and other applicable internal and regulatory requirements
Reviews and approves engineering specifications with dimensions and tolerances appropriate for performance and functional requirements as well as technical assessments of mechanical design (eg FEA, tolerance analysis, testing, etc.)
Coordinates with suppliers and procurement teams to manage the production and commercialization process
Leads or supports cadaver labs during surgeon design team evaluations and surgeon education events, including cadaver setup, running a fluoroscopy machine, clean-up, etc.
Required Skills / Capabilities
•Proven ability to drive the product development process, within deadline and budget
•Demonstrated expertise with CAD software (Pro/E, Creo, or SolidWorks)
•Expertise in use of project planning tools such as Microsoft Project preferred
•Demonstrated ability of interpreting an extensive variety of technical specifications in mathematical or diagram form and managing several abstract and/or concrete variables
Education and Experience
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent experience
Previous experience leading and coaching a high performing team
Experience in medical device industry, with complex mechanical design (spine or orthopedics) and/or emerging technologies preferred
