WSP's Environmental Water Group is seeking a highly motivated Senior Technical Manager, Biological Services to join our team in San Diego, CA .

WSP is seeking a team-oriented and self-directed candidate to support their San Diego Environmental Water Group as a Senior Technical Manager, Biological Services. The position represents an excellent opportunity to lead the growth of a diverse team dedicated to helping our clients protect our region’s ecosystem and water resources. The opportunity includes:

Representing the largest group of water professionals in California, we have a diverse portfolio of clients and projects throughout the state.

  • Leading the growth of an established practice : You will participate as a leader in a variety of scientific organizations and multi-stakeholder programs. Supported by a well-established, client-focused program and team, you will have an opportunity to grow the watershed and aquatic science practices in existing and new markets throughout California.

  • Participating in meaningful, cutting-edge science : You will lead and collaborate on a wide range of projects at the forefront of watershed and aquatic science. These projects include researching and assessing the health of our streams, rivers, lakes, lagoons, and oceans throughout the state. As such, you should have a proven track record in managing multi-discipline teams, supporting regulatory compliance programs, analyzing and interpreting laboratory and field results, and communicating complex science in easy-to-understand ways. Ultimately, your work will directly help protect and improve our region’s ecosystem and water resources.

Your Impact

  • Participate as a leader on scientific committees/ organizations (e.g., California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA), Soc of Environ Toxiol and Chem (SETAC), Regional Southern California Bight Monitoring Program, CA Stormwater Monitoring Coalition (SMC), CA Aquatic Bioassessment Workgroup (CABW)

  • Experience leading multi-stakeholder monitoring programs in southern CA

  • Prepare and lead technical workshops/ presentations at conferences, educational institutions, and regulatory agencies

  • Collaborating with and supporting senior scientists and other staff level scientists for a wide range of environmental monitoring and permitting activities

  • Support and lead collecting of sediment, water, and biological samples

  • Operating field collection equipment (e.g., sediment and water samplers, water quality instruments)

  • Preparation of Work Plans and Quality Assurance Project Plans

  • Field sample collection permitting and communication (e.g., CDFW, USFWS)

  • Boat operations maintenance, trailering, and safety

  • Managing and analyzing field collected data

  • Summarizing and analyzing laboratory results (chemistry, toxicity, and biological communities)

  • Preparing report text and maps, data tables and summaries, and conducting statistical analyses of field collected and laboratory data

  • Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) related to data and report review

  • Technical and scientific writing

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, or related field.

  • 10+ years of direct environmental consulting experience.

  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance and permitting programs at the federal, state, and local levels.

  • Demonstrated success in the development and management of clients.

  • Senior Leader recognized for technical excellence and the development of client-focused, creative and practical solutions.

  • Seller-Doer with established local network of clients and contacts, entrepreneurial spirit, and a successful track record in business development

  • Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.

  • Willingness and ability to travel to WSP offices, and project/client sites as required.

  • Reside in the San Diego area in order to complete field, office, and potentially laboratory work.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Participating in regional scientific organizations

  • Advanced statistical analysis experience (multivariate), GIS

  • Knowledge of local and regional water quality regulations (e.g., NPDES permits; Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), State of CA Sediment Quality Objectives (SQOs), Biological objectives, Harmful Algal Bloom, ASBS, and Toxicity Policy; the Clean Water Act Sections 401 and 404; the Porter-Cologne Act; the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act; local and state Municipal and Industrial Stormwater Programs)

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $109,400-$186,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
