The Security Products group is responsible for building products that keep Amazon.com and its subsidiaries secure. We are connected to all parts of Amazon's business and its massive, worldwide service-oriented architecture. We enable the Amazon businesses to design, build and operate their enterprise scale systems securely on AWS. We are looking for a Software Development Engineer who is excited about leading the technical vision and architecture for mission critical software security systems that affect how Amazon developers create and deploy software that is secure and protects Amazon's and our customers data.

You will collaborate with the leadership team to drive key engineering and business decisions that will influence the Amazon developer experience. You will contribute to all parts of the software development and deployment lifecycle across the entire Amazon development community, including design, implementation, documentation, testing, deployment and operations across multiple teams. Since our systems are foundational to the Amazon ecosystem, you will also have the opportunity to learn about various Amazon business including the Amazon e-Commerce websites, Prime, Alexa and AWS.

Successful candidates for this position will have strong software engineering fundamentals (object-oriented design, algorithms and data structures) and a good grasp of advanced systems concepts and design. They must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be self-driven and deliver high quality results in a fast paced environment. They need to really enjoy working closely with their peers within a group of very talented engineers, data scientists and data engineers.

Key job responsibilities

As a key member of the engineering team, you will have influence on our product strategy by helping define the product features, refine system architecture, and spearhead best practices that enable a quality product.

A commitment to teamwork, hustle, and strong communication skills (to both business and technical partners) are absolute requirements.

You will heavily influence design and implement significant portions of “critical-path” code, work independently and collaborate on software design reviews with senior engineers to ensure software is scalable, performant, and maintainable for the long term.

You will help deliver high quality software that is secure, testable, maintainable, efficient, and has little to no defects.

Creating a highly stable foundational service requires exceptional technical expertise, a sound understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science, and practical experience building large-scale distributed systems.

You will focus on operational excellence including analyzing the overall health and performance of the system, such as the operational management of the graph database cluster, performance of our daily ETL and vended APIs.

You should enjoy working on complex system software, is customer-centric, and feels strongly about building good software as well as making that software achieve its operational goals.

A day in the life

On a daily basis, you will lead design and implement of critical projects and work with data engineers, data scientists and other SDEs across orgs to help build security products that keep Amazon secure

Our team is composed of SDEs, data scientists, data engineers and BIE's. All these people with different roles work cohesively to create a product that can analyzes massive amount of data to drive useful insights that help keep Amazon secure.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $151,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
