Medtronic is a world leader in providing health care products that restore health and extend life. The Medtronic Diabetes R&D team contributes directly to this mission; we deliver software and firmware for Medtronic’s diabetes Care Products. InPen™ is the first and only FDA-cleared smart pen for insulin delivery. InPen was developed to address many of the issues both Healthcare Professionals and those living with diabetes face on a daily basis.

We are looking for a talented Sr. Software Engineer to join our organization as we develop safety critical software for medical devices that hundreds of thousands of people around the world depend on daily. A Day in the Life

As a Sr. Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership for firmware development. The primary role for this position is writing the low-level embedded software interfacing with hardware electronics. As part of this role, you will also coordinate technical discussions and problem solving for software projects and collaborate with the platform and system architects on the impacts of design decisions. You will be a key interface between the firmware team and other software teams and functions including participating in change control and risk analysis activities as part of the software quality process.

Key Technical Competencies:

  • Expert in software engineering best practices for embedded software development.

  • Experience in firmware development using C/C++

  • Embedded / firmware development using state machine design.

  • Developing embedded systems using Bluetooth Low Energy communication protocols.

  • Interpret, understand, and provide feedback on firmware requirements. Perform requirement analysis to determine completeness and compliance with software/hardware systems. Ability to work with requirement management tools.

  • Pursues industry best practices and technology trends. Collaborates with industry thought leaders. Recognized as the organization’s leader in applying new technology. Provides vision and assures the organization is an early adopter of industry innovations.

  • Recognized as a technical leader of firmware/software development methods for safety critical, fault tolerant real-time systems.

Responsibilities may include the following

  • Design, develop, test, debug full firmware features for medical devices.

  • Work with Systems team to develop product requirements for medical devices.

  • Gather metrics on the firmware development process and production firmware.

  • Generates firmware development policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Creates documentation throughout the development process

  • Works with other disciplines to develop system-minded implementations that take into account safety, performance, communication, user interface and other aspects of a final product.

  • Commits to achieving and exceeding project goals and timelines.

  • Performs duties in compliance with the Quality System.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile.

  • Able to lift 25 pounds

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering or related Engineering or Sciences field required

  • 4 years of embedded systems engineering experience in product development with a bachelor’s degree,

  • or 2+ years of embedded systems engineering experience in product development with a master’s degree.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in C/C++ Embedded systems development

  • Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy

  • Experience in medical software development process such as IEC 62304 or other regulated software development

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
