Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Engineering Manager in San Francisco, California
Our team provides the buy-side platform on which advertisers and curators in our marketplace can access inventory and transact their ad campaigns with high efficiency and at high volume.
As a Principal Software Engineering Manager in our team, you will be making technical, operational, planning, and strategic contributions to our real-time platform in support of our growing business. This opportunity will allow you to hone your skills building systems that operate at high scale, high availability, low latency, and high cardinality. Responsibilities
Guides partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead, product owners, and commercial partners) to determine requirements within and across teams.
Guides teams and leads identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
Guides team to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers).
Guides team and acts as an expert for Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and monitors other engineers across product lines, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
Leads product development and scaling to customer requirements and applies best practices for meeting scaling needs and performance expectations and holds accountability for products that do not meet expectations.
Brings strong engineering practices and processes, excels at operating and supporting high volume and highly critical business systems on a global scale, acts as an engineering role model who brings strong C and Unix experience in building distributed systems, and mentors and develops other engineers in the team on all aspects of world class software development.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
4+ years people management experience.
4+ years experience in C development on unix environments.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of advertising systems.
Experience in delivering mission-critical business backend systems on tight deadlines
Building, monitoring, and operating globally distributed systems
Experience with large scale and low latency systems
Track record of strong execution, collaboration, and seeking alignment, working with stakeholders across a global team
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
