General Description

SUNY Niagara is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Director of Facilities for Custodial Services and Grounds to lead and manage the custodial services and grounds operations at our Sanborn campus and Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. This role provides critical leadership, planning, and day-to-day direction and supervision for custodial, cleaning, and grounds operations to ensure that all campus facilities and outdoor areas are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and appearance. The Assistant Director will oversee operations across all shifts to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Typical Work Activities

  1. Works cooperatively with others and accepts direction from supervisors.

  2. Supervises the cleaning, custodial, maintenance and grounds personnel as assigned, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluating performance and making recommendations for personnel actions and motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and performance in a union setting.

  3. Manages the logistical requirements for the cleaning, custodial, maintenance and grounds operations as well as the vehicle and equipment fleet requirements.

  4. Recommends the hiring of cleaners, custodians, maintenance and grounds personnel as needed.

  5. Recommends staffing levels within existing resources and in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement in order to maintain the College facilities and grounds in a satisfactory manner.

  6. Develops and implements appropriate procedures and standards for the cleaning, custodial, maintenance and grounds personnel in order to ensure the facilities and grounds are properly maintained.

  7. Schedules and coordinates personnel to support the use of facilities by on-campus and outside groups.

  8. Promotes organizational teamwork, participative management, customer service and collaborative problem solving.

  9. Works with the Director of Facilities & VP of Administration with the procurement process to ensure required supplies and equipment are on hand to satisfactorily maintain the facilities and grounds.

  10. Communicates effectively and appropriately, verbally and in writing, with other College departments relative to the status of requests for cleaning, custodial, maintenance or grounds services.

  11. Ensures compliance with relevant Federal, State and local codes to include OSHA , PESH and other relevant safety and environmental requirements. Acts as site coordinator for MSDS and relevant materials handing regulations and requirements.

  12. Establishes and implements staff training programs as directed.

  13. Responsible for preparing, implementing and monitoring budgets for facilities and grounds, in concert with the Director of Facilities.

  14. Responds to calls for assistance on an as needed basis. Will rotate on call coverage with Director of Facilities.

  15. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.

    Essential Functions

Must be able to navigate relationships with a diverse population; must be able to relate to all elements of the campus community; must be able to operate computers, write reports and directives, and maintain records; must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to individuals and groups, on and off-campus; must be physically able to actively supervise personnel located throughout the College property. Physical condition must be commensurate with the requirements of the position.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree;

  • 3 years of supervisory experience in a field related to the care and maintenance and or custodial services of a facility;

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs and Internet/Web;

  • Experience assisting with the preparation, implementation and monitoring of a department level budget.

    Desirable Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree;

  • Experience working in the cleaning, custodial or grounds maintenance area of a facility;

  • Experience working in building trades;

  • Supervisory experience of building trades personnel;

  • Experience working in an educational institution or like institutions;

  • Experience with facilities maintenance software such as Preventive Maintenance scheduling and monitoring;

  • Experience working in a unionized work environment.
