Sarasota County Government Fleet Service Technician in Sarasota, Florida

  • Perform diagnostic tests to identify, and rebuild and repair malfunctions on all diesel, gasoline, and electric equipment.

  • Make repairs to all major and minor sub-systems.

  • Diagnose hydraulic malfunctions, and engines, repair pumps, cylinders, and control valves.

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on everything from UTVs, auto, light/heavy trucks, trailers, pumps, construction, and other heavy equipment.

  • Troubleshoot and repair pumps, actuators, transmissions, compressors, pneumatic and electric controls, air-conditioning units, and components.

  • May weld and cut parts using welding equipment.

  • Perform inspections and serviceability/reliability checks/repairs/rebuilds on all brake, steering, and drive line components.

  • Utilizes laptop computers to complete, and verify parts/labor, and inputs comments to detail repairs made.

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on Fire/ EMS vehicles and equipment.

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. On-Call Required.

  • Pinkney Shop (Station 20, Sarasota)

  • Fleet Garage Pinkney Complex

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or its equivalent.

  • Two (2) years of mechanical experience in automotive or heavy vehicle/equipment repair.

  • A valid Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License with a Tanker endorsement within six (6) months from the time of hire. (Paid for by the county!)

  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Complete and maintain a minimum of two (2) ASE certifications (ASE or EVT certifications). (Paid for by the county!)

  • Ability to obtain Hazmat certification.

  • Certification in basic welding.

  • Basic welding experience.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

    * Must supply own basic tool set and rolling toolbox upon hire. This position is eligible for a $1,200 (net) annual tool allowance after the probationary period*

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

About Everything Else:

Starting pay range of $23.54/hour (Step 4),

Potential higher pay (steps) for those with multiple years of experience.

For Master status, as well as each A.S.E. Certification obtained, there is an additional $0.20/hr pay additive!
