Ellis Medicine INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER in Schenectady, New York

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Instructional Designer supports the successful design and delivery of the School of Nursing curriculum and instructional materials. The Instructional Designer is also responsible for supporting the Information Technology function of the School of Nursing in collaboration with the Ellis Medicine Information Technology Department. The incumbent chairs the Technology in Education Committee, and works directly with the Curriculum Committee, the Systematic Evaluation Committee, Simulation Laboratory Coordinator, faculty, and the staff of the school. The instructional designer will assume responsibility for the development, design, implementation, instruction, and evaluation of curriculum integrating technologies at the School of Nursing. The instructional designer will provide a high level of customer service, actively work to troubleshoot complex problems related to desktop hardware, classroom technology and software, instructional technology to include the learning management system, the high fidelity patient simulators, and the electronic student information system. Creates a welcoming atmosphere for students with diverse backgrounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology or equivalent required.

  • Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Experience within an academic setting: knowledge and application of learning theories (pedagogy and andragogy) and current knowledge of educational technology used in online and blended courses; experience managing, administrating, and designing courses in a learning management system is required.

  • Windows-based software required, including but not limited to Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Experience with student population, electronic databases, student information systems, and classroom technology is required.

  • Incumbent must be creative, innovative, and able to bring new ideas to the work environment; able to manage multiple priorities and tasks with attention to detail; have good organizational and time management skills; able to work as a team member as well as self-directed and efficient in accomplishing tasks and responsibilities.

  • Incumbent must have strong interpersonal and communication skills (electronic, written, and oral) to effectively interact with a variety of students and staff members and flexibility within the scope of the position is required to handle the high-volume workload.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or workstation for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

    Instructional Designer functions:

  • Assure that new students have access to the Ellis Medicine network by submitting IT requests for network access

  • Enroll new students and faculty in the LMS, deactivate students or faculty who separate from the Belanger School of Nursing

  • Request badge access for all non-paid individuals (e.g. students)

  • Orient new students, new faculty and adjunct faculty to the learning management system, electronic student information system, and the technology associated with simulation.

  • Function as the LMS administrator.

  • Learn the School technology, and subsequently act as a resource to faculty and students for technology problem solving

  • Assist faculty in the integration of learning resources

  • Assist the Simulation Laboratory Coordinator with the use of and development of new simulations, develop student and interdisciplinary evaluations of simulation activities

  • Serve on the Systematic Evaluation and Curriculum Committees

  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Committee Chairperson(s) and Course Coordinators to prioritize instructional development within the learning management system.

  • Collaborate with Curriculum Committee, faculty, and students to promote the use of class time for collaborative student work and experiential learning. Promotes the development of strategies for self-paced student learning and learning targeted to multiple learning styles.

  • Explore potential education technology products and solutions for incorporation into the program, including the potential of multimedia to enhance the learning environment.

  • Collaborate with vendors (e.g., Laerdal, learning management system providers) to develop learning activities that promote student learning

  • Make recommendations for program enhancement (e.g., learning objects) through the Curriculum and the Technology in Education Committees

  • Collaborate with faculty to design learning objects and revise course materials in the learning management system.

  • Assist faculty development and integrate instructional strategies in the classroom and online that will assist students transfer (apply) learning to the skills lab, sim lab or clinical situation.

  • Assist faculty with program (course) redesign to promote efficiency of learning.

  • Explore a variety of methods for the online evaluation of students using the learning management system

  • Create faculty tools within the LMS to meet specific goals and criteria established by the Curriculum or Systematic Evaluation committee

  • Analyze evaluations results for trends, gaps, areas for improvement and, based on the data, make recommendations for future program development

  • Assist the course coordinators and chair of systematic evaluation integrate course and program evaluation feedback into instructional re-design

  • Assume responsibility for managing the measurement of student learning outcomes and providing documentation of the process and outcomes to the Curriculum Committee and the Systematic Evaluation Committee.

  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Committee Chairperson(s) to assure the student learning outcomes are used to organize the curriculum, guide the delivery of instruction, direct learning activities and evaluate students’ progress.

  • Collaborate with faculty and department Committee Chairs to inform program decision-making using aggregated program evaluation data.

  • Collaborate with the Faculty Development Committee chair to provide education and development opportunities to assure that faculty development needs are met in the area of education technology, instructional design and online course design and delivery.

    Chairperson of Technology in Education Committee:

  • Lead meetings of the Technology in Education Committee

  • Prepare and provide a monthly committee report for the Faculty Organization Committee

  • Manage technology and infrastructure systems, projects, and endeavors for the School of Nursing

  • Investigate new technologies for use at the School of Nursing

  • Participate in the annual operations and capital budget processes

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the Ellis Medicine IT Liaison and various Ellis IT personnel

  • Adheres to hospital policies related to annual health assessment and mandatory Healthstream assignments.

    Salary Range: $24.75-$36.53/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
