Job Description

Director, Design and Innovation

Global Development | Clinical Operations, Design and Innovation

This position can be based in Foster City, California, Seattle, Washington or remotely in the US and may require domestic or international travel as required (valid travel documents must be obtainable)

Position Overview

The Director of Design & Innovation will be a key member of the Technology & Innovation leadership team focusing on Innovation strategy and capability delivery across the clinical trial portfolio. The Design and Innovation function is driven by the mission of designing and transforming the clinical trial experience. We drive evidence-based decisions fueled by advanced analytics and human-centric capabilities to enable the rapid development and approval of our products.

The Director will report to and partner closely with the Senior Director of Design and Innovation to drive the strategy, framework, and methodology for delivering the portfolio of projects within the defined budget and timelines. This includes leadership of design insights, operational analytics and additional capabilities for studies through the Design Delivery team. Design Delivery coupled with capabilities allows for a facilitated design process that uses data to drive decisions and leverages a combination of people, process and technology to deliver innovative clinical programs and studies.

The Director will have experience in global clinical development and operations, innovative thinking, program/study design and execution, and global operational feasibility. A primary responsibility will include the design, development, and delivery of operational strategy (global study feasibility) and other capabilities within programs and studies. They will play a key role in designing, improving, and executing the capability development process for the function.

Core Responsibilities

  • As a member of the Design & Innovation Leadership Team, actively develop and evolve the functional strategy and innovation capability roadmap to enable strategic application of innovative tactics; support the development and management of methodologies for identifying, exploring, testing, validating, integrating and scaling capabilities that align with the roadmap

  • Provide direction and expertise in the strategic implementation of Design Delivery, applying a cross-portfolio perspective to scale learnings and expertise in support of therapeutic area programs and study design and execution

  • Serve as a Design & Innovation leader and trusted business partner with program and study team leadership, collaborating toward the successful design and execution of Phase I-IV global clinical trials to identify opportunities to modernize the clinical trial experience and accelerate portfolio delivery, providing real time input on the impact of study design choices on costs, timeline, patient value and recruitment on the portfolio

  • Lead innovative design sessions based on program needs, utilizing expert facilitation methodologies including decision frameworks and defined success criteria

  • Engage with patient experience partners, patient communities, advocacy groups, and site/investigator organizations

  • Continuously improve operational strategy process and deliverables, applying principles of change management and data-driven decision making to drive enterprise-wide transformation of clinical trial design and delivery as a key component of Design Delivery

  • Directly and indirectly influence functional management consisting of full-time equivalents, contractors, and partners with a coaching mindset aimed at developing skills in leadership, project management and strategic decision-making


Knowledge, Experience, & Skills

  • Experience managing complex scientific and analytical data to support the program and study design process

  • High degree of customer focus and collaboration in a cross-functional team environment

  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills, including agile project management of multiple time-sensitive projects

  • Inspirational leadership style for high performance, attracting talent and communicating effectively to influence across a matrix and create a clear sense of direction

  • Advanced capabilities in Change Management and Business Transformation initiatives

  • Strong command of solving complex problems and use of highly developed independent judgement relating to domestic and global regulations, guidelines, investigator interactions, and timelines

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a track record for effectively communicating scientific, medical, and organizational concepts

  • Comfortable leading through influence in an environment of ambiguity/uncertainty; able to adapt to feedback or changing strategies quickly

  • Extensive interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor staff and organize, motivate and lead multifunctional teams to deliver results

Education and Experience Requirements

  • 12+ years relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences, Information Technology, Computer Science, Pharmacy, Data Science, or related field

  • 10+ years relevant experience with a Masters or higher degree in Life Sciences, Information Technology, Computer Science, Pharmacy, Data Science, or related field

  • Extensive working knowledge of drug development and global clinical trial conduct including recent advances in data science and technology

The salary range for this position is: $205,700.00 - $266,200.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
