A leader in the environmental sciences, the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies (CICOES) is a collaboration between the University of Washington, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Oregon State University, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our research includes a broad range of global and regional topics of interest to the public, particularly to citizens of the Pacific Northwest.

The three main components of CICOES’ mission are to: • Facilitate and conduct collaborative, multidisciplinary research to support NOAA’s mission. • Educate and prepare the next generation of scientists to be technically skilled, environmentally literate, and reflect the national diversity. • Engage and educate the citizenry of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and the world to increase understanding of natural and anthropogenic impacts on ecosystem health and socioeconomic sustainability.

This position oversees the Education, Outreach, and Communication programs for CICOES. It requires a person with strong organization, communication and collaboration skills to work with NOAA Federal scientists, CICOES researchers--as well as scientists and administrative staff from across UW, other universities and non-profit organizations--to manage the day-to-day and long-term program operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Manage the CICOES Education and Outreach Program: 60%

• Program Manager for the CICOES Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program. This highly successful internship program is the core of our education and outreach efforts and requires significant year-round preparation. It brings a diverse group of talented students from across the US to work with UW and NOAA scientists on a 9-week research project. Specific responsibilities include: • Serve as the primary operations contact. Field all inquiries from prospective students and mentors. • Oversee REU students’ applications from organizing incoming application materials, through application reviews, and finally intern selection and formal offers. • Recruit and train potential mentors from multiple UW departments, NOAA and other partners. • Build partnerships with minority-serving institutions (e.g. Northwest Indian College, Heritage University) to recruit underrepresented students. • Coordinate travel and housing arrangements for the interns. • Plan and execute intern orientation and onboarding • Plan and execute intern presentations and poster symposium at the end of each program. • Plan social and team-building events during the students’ 9-week internship. • Maintain and track an accurate record of all students who participated in the CICOES program.

o Work collaboratively with colleagues across CICOES and UW to design and produce virtual and in person outreach events. o Primary contact for outside organizations seeking science professionals to attend and participate in community and private events. o Coordinate joint educational engagement events and cultivate partnerships with local organizations including the Pacific Science Center, the Seattle Aquarium, the Seattle Museum of Flight, NOAA Science Camp, and the Burke Museum. o Oversee the CICOES Outreach budget as well as the NSF and NOAA REU budgets o Represent CICOES at local and national conferences to recruit participants and represent CICOES programs.

Manage CICOCES Communications: 35%

• Production Director and Designer for CICOES Magazine • Determine content of the magazine. Recruit authors and proofreaders. • Prepare and maintain production schedule. • Responsible for magazine design, layout, and photography. • Copyedit all articles

o Oversee the creation, development, and production of communication materials (print, online, visual) for scientific and general audiences. Work with CICOES leadership to ensure that the Institute’s key values are reflected in all publications. o Manage CICOES website content including press releases, news stories, events, staff profiles, announcements, and social media. o Track media coverage of CICOES and NOAA scientists and highlight these on the CICOES website. o Coordinate with UW News to increase media coverage of CICOES research and activities. Serve as primary media contact for external news organizations. Coordinate with NOAA communications teams for web stories and press releases.

Other duties as assigned:5%

• Provide administrative support to the Director and Assistant Director on special initiatives and ad hoc projects as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in Science, Communications or related field (equivalent experience can substitute for degree) • Four or more years’ experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Experience in program management and/or outreach activities in an academic or research setting. • Experience developing and editing websites, publications, newsletters, and/or social media profiles. • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, prioritize, take direction, and execute multiple projects meeting established deadlines with little direct supervision. • Demonstrated excellent and efficient writing, editing, and presentation skills. • Demonstrated ability to conceive, implement, and evaluate creative communication strategies. • Demonstrated ability to manage high volume of work, juggle competing priorities and deadlines, and communicating with stakeholders when reprioritization is needed. • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with representatives from all levels of staff, faculty, students, and external stakeholders across a large, complex, multi-campus organizational structure in a fast-paced environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience using Adobe Creative Suite. Familiarity with graphic design principles. • Familiarity with the university, and/or with other education and cultural organizations • Basic understanding of video production
