We are among the nation’s leading recipients of research and training funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, including the TBI and Burn Model Systems grants. We have a long history of innovative clinical and research programs, strong research infrastructure, active mentoring of junior faculty and a rich network of potential clinical and research collaborators among faculty within and outside our department.
The department offers four graduate degree programs, including master's degrees in Occupational Therapy and Prosthetics & Orthotics, as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, , and a PhD in Rehabilitation Science.
Join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team developing treatments for paralysis. We have several active research projects exploring novel treatments for spinal cord injury in animal models. Approaches include optogenetics and spinal stimulation.
The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 provides support for experiments in rodents, as well as performing histology. Duties include animal training and testing, data collection and analysis, and animal surgery, surgical support, immunohistochemistry, and imaging on a microscope. Experience working with research animals is highly desirable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform behavioral training of rodents and animal care for experimental purposes (40%)
Perform tissue processing and imaging (30%)
Perform experimental data collection and data analysis (18%)
Design and construct electrodes and devices for experimental use (5%)
Participate in lab meetings and planning sessions and coordinate with other project and veterinary staff (5%)
Prepare for and perform animal surgeries on rodents (2%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors Degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Neurobiology, or Bioengineering
One year of experience in related area Or equivalent combination of education/experience DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of relevant laboratory research experience and/or as a laboratory technician
Experience with rodents as experimental animals
Experience with histology and tissue processing
Experience with systems neuroscience techniques including extracellular recording, microsimulation, and brain-computer interfaces
Computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database searches (PubMed, etc.)
