The Department of Comparative Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE

This position performs advanced immunohistochemistry and quantitative image analysis, troubleshoot and maintain cutting-edge laboratory equipment, and ensure quality control. Additionally, this position contributes to veterinary diagnostic projects, assist in necropsy procedures, and grant-funded research initiatives. This position drives high-quality data collection, analysis, and reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Histology and Imaging Core (HIC) (40%) Evaluate Research Objectives: • Assess specific research questions or problems related to histology and imaging. • Determine the most relevant methodologies and techniques to address these questions effectively.

Select Procedures and Techniques: • Choose appropriate manual and automated brightfield and fluorescence immunohistochemistry (IHC) techniques based on the research objectives. • Select quantitative image analysis methods and stereology software tools that provide the necessary precision and accuracy.

Apply Procedures and Techniques: • Perform IHC, ensuring consistent application of techniques to maintain data integrity. • Conduct quantitative image analysis and stereology using specialized software to extract meaningful data. • Operate and maintain advanced imaging equipment for accurate data acquisition and analysis.

Quality Control and Troubleshooting: • Implement quality control measures to ensure the reliability of results from histological and imaging procedures. • Analyze instrument malfunctions, apply corrective actions, and monitor performance to prevent recurrence.

Protocol Development and Training: • Develop and write detailed protocols for histology and imaging procedures. • Train laboratory personnel and users on proper use of equipment and techniques, ensuring adherence to standardized procedures.

Data Management and Reporting: • Use VADDS and Wordpress lab information database software for accurate case accessioning, tracking, and billing. • Maintain detailed and up-to-date laboratory notebooks documenting all procedures and findings.

Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL)/Comparative Pathology Program (25%) Evaluate Research Objectives: • Identify specific diagnostic and research questions within the scope of veterinary pathology. • Determine the appropriate necropsy techniques and diagnostic methods required to address these questions.

Select Procedures and Techniques: • Choose standardized necropsy procedures that align with research and diagnostic objectives. • Select suitable methods for sample collection, preservation, and analysis to ensure accurate results.

Apply Procedures and Techniques: • Conduct necropsy procedures meticulously, ensuring all steps are performed according to established protocols. • Facilitate accurate diagnostic results by applying the selected techniques consistently.

Quality Control and Documentation: • Implement quality control protocols to maintain the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic findings. • Use VADDS software to track, upload, and reconcile diagnostic cases, ensuring proper documentation and data management.

Protocol Development and Training: • Assist in the production and updates of Standard Operating Procedures and Working Guidelines for necropsy and diagnostic tasks. • Train new users on VADDS and other relevant systems to ensure compliance with standardized procedures.

Coordination and Communication: • Coordinate sample/material transport and shipping, ensuring proper handling and timely delivery. • Communicate diagnostic results and research findings to stakeholders clearly and accurately.

Grant Funded Studies (30%) • Identify and define research problems related to rodent studies, design approaches, and develop methodologies for obtaining necropsy specimens. • Assist with necropsy procedures and prepare detailed necropsy reports and trim sheets. • Analyze research results, develop conclusions, and formulate hypotheses. • Present research findings in publishable form and contribute to scientific literature.

Administration (5%) • Schedule and coordinate multiple incoming shipments to the laboratory. • Perform quality assurance on incoming samples and communicate with various stakeholders. • Track orders through the histology workflow and connect pathologists with completed orders and reports. • Perform other duties as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience in pathology / histology / immunohistochemistry OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Work with rodent models in research Knowledge and training in pathology, histology and or imaging. • Good communication skills, time management and independent work ethic • Strong Microsoft Office skills • Background in scientific field/biology
