The Team: The Ocean Engineering (OE) Department designs, builds, tests, and deploys custom equipment for oceanographic research, marine renewable energy, marine robotics, subsea acoustic instrumentation, and other basic and applied science efforts. The OE department is a long-standing resource for scientists, R&D organizations, and the U.S Navy by delivering technology and expertise from the design phase through at-sea deployment of custom, one-of-a-kind scientific instruments and systems. As a member of the OE department your work will be deployed above and below the world's oceans, glaciers, and other harsh, remote environments across the globe.

See Yourself at APL (https://seeyourselfapl.uw.edu/) as a member of the Ocean Engineering Department! We are seeking a full-time Senior Hardware Design Engineer to join the team. This position has a salary range of $120,000 to $170,004 per year ($10,000-$14,167 monthly), along with great employment benefits and competitive total compensation incentives.

Senior Hardware Design Engineer Responsibilities: As a Senior Hardware Design Engineer in the OE team, your responsibilities will include:

· Design, build, and test of electrical hardware and systems · Laboratory and in-field troubleshooting of electrical systems · Technical leadership, project management, and budgetary considerations for projects that are moderate to large in scope · Planning and executing at-sea deployments · Project leadership and mentoring of junior engineers on the team

Your work may directly contribute to observations such as ocean/atmosphere interactions, ocean carbon absorption, ocean/ice/glacier interactions, coastal ecosystem monitoring, and/or may be involved in the development of novel renewable energy or scientific instrumentation technologies. As a senior engineer, you will have a great deal of autonomy to define and implement solutions to these problems.

Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

Successful candidates will typically have around 10 years of experience in a professional environment providing the following:

· System & electronics development from initial requirements, design, and testing, through field deployment · Schematic design and PCB layout using Altium, KiCad, or other ECAD software · Managing PCB fabrication and assembly with external manufacturers · Hand soldering, debugging, and system integration of PCB’s · Diagnosing, documenting, and resolving electronic hardware problems · Designing, documenting, and building custom electrical harnesses · Participating and performing in peer-level and cross-discipline design reviews · Managing multiple projects in parallel

This role requires that candidates be able to meet the physical requirements necessary to work at sea in small to large vessels, or other field sites, and be willing to perform the required duties aboard sea-going vessels. Field efforts are not anticipated to be more than 10% of a candidate's work averaged over a year but may range from days to a few weeks long at a time.

This role requires that candidates are U.S. Citizens.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

While not required, you’ll stand out if you have: · Experience in mixed-signal / analog electronic design. · Experience with power electronics design, high-speed digital design, or RF design. · Experience with digital protocols such as RS-232, RS-485, SPI, CAN, or Ethernet. · Experience working with autonomous or high-reliability systems. · Experience with C, C++, and Python programming for bring-up and testing.
