REI Senior Manager, Platform Engineering in Seattle, Washington

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager to manage our Platform Engineering areas of Developer Platforms and Integrations. This is a transformational role driving Back-End Platform engineering with an amazing community of engineers. In our team we are avid campers, chefs, pilots, sailors, woodworkers and hikers that all have a passion for where their hobbies converge with working on awesome technology to help REI customers.

The Platform Engineering team builds industry aligned, cloud based, integration and developer platforms using the most modern tools aligned to Java Spring and CNCF (Cloud Native Compute Framework).

Our Engineering culture is all about partnership and elevating others. We even run an internal training program on Cloud, Integrations, Developer Platforms and other emergent areas. Reporting to the director of Platform Engineering, this is a widely visible role where you can bring your vision, creativity, and your supportive leadership to grow the team and platforms to meet the needs of the Co-op

In this role you will …

  • Guide teams building supporting platforms for Cloud Native, API and Event driven, Java applications for Customer Engagement and Business Functions

  • Define what true developer productivity is, what constitutes a great developer platform at speed and scale, and how to bring this to practice

  • Build and manage an organization of engineering teams accountable for the custom Dev CI/CD experience at REI (CI/CD in context of Provisioning, Building, Testing, Release, Deployment and Runtime.)

  • Drive the team supporting and iterating on API Management Platforms. (e.g. Gloo, Apigee)

  • Growing a Service Discovery, Service Routing and Service Mesh tech stack for use across REI’s various application stacks (e.g. Isitio, Envoy, Gloo)

  • Help drive Cloud Adoption, Cloud Compliance and Cloud Engineering consistency across REI tech teams

  • Manage the build and release of a new enterprise Developer Platform experience (e.g. Spotify Backstage)

  • Working in an agile engineering area focused on continuous innovation and continuous improvement

  • Be an amazing t-shaped leader with authentic enthusiasm for helping our Developers increase productivity and accelerate REI’s integration platform journey

  • Cultivate partnerships across Architecture, Security, Development, Product and Infrastructure teams

  • Handle planning and breaking down large projects; Manage program and project risks appropriately; Identify and mitigate internal and cross-functional dependencies and blockers

  • Drive technical decision making through objectively assessing trade-offs based on architecture, scope, complexity, business priorities, and impact to developer experience at REI

  • Leverage a strong technical foundation and experience to provide appropriate guidance to a growing organization

  • Build pipeline tooling to support REI’s Data Center Exit

  • Integration Developer Platforms tooling and offerings with Runtime tooling and services

  • Cultivate career growth through setting objectives, regular feedback, and sharing best practices

  • Recruit new talent to contribute to our Platform engineering teams

Responsibilities and Qualifications

We need your ‘awesome’ in these areas:

  • Leadership experience in a shared platform context being a change agent at scale

  • Background as a Software Engineer with an expertise of what it takes to ship code and what an optimal developer experience is based on first hand knowledge

  • Proven knowledge of API and Event based architectures and value real time integrations have to Retail

  • Proven ability to take features and functionality from requirements to completion, while maintaining agility, security and quality control.

  • Translating business requirements to technical needs and the inverse, translating technical problems to a non-technical audience.

  • Contribute to an adaptable, mutually supportive work spirit and psychologically safe culture where people can do their best work

You bring these technical skills and abilities:

  • 5+ years supervisory experience in the information technology field and the ability to direct technical work teams

  • AWS and cloud technologies

  • Understanding Java Spring Software Development Frameworks

  • Building in Security in Cloud and Integration platforms (auth, encryption, WAF, etc)

  • API Management Platforms (Apigee, Gloo)

  • Service Routing, Service Discovery, Service Mesh (Isitio, Consul)

  • Event Streaming Platforms (Kinesis, Confluent Kafka)

  • Continuous Integration tools and scripting (Jenkins, Groovy, etc)

  • Build tools (Maven, Gradle, Ant)

  • Container orchestration systems. (Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, etc)

  • Runtime Tooling and Services (Datadog, Kibana, Grafana, Circuit Breaking Patterns, etc)

  • Template based CI/CD (GitLab)

  • Ability to operate in a Product-led approach for Engineering

Pay Range

$141,200.00 - $240,000.00 per year
