SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably. As part of a hardworking team of diverse responsible engineers, the Crew Systems Engineer (RE) will independently develop and align architectures, concepts of operations, and hardware trades for the Space Destinations Crew Systems fluid-based hardware on Orbital Reef, with a specific focus on the commode. Individually performs hardware design throughout the life cycle, from requirements to design, acceptance, and operations. The RE will interface with affected systems and stakeholders throughout the life cycle of the hardware development and will provide technical leadership to develop solutions and execute development, testing, and analysis to support technology maturation, trade studies, and down-selects. The RE will set technical direction and provide solutions to complex technical problems and issues. Expertise in fan sizing, airflow, air filters, fluids and air routing and sizing, fluid separation, pressure sensors and actuators, and materials compatibility will support the maturation and down-select process. The Crew Systems Commode RE will evaluate hardware suppliers for technical, cost, and schedule adherence to the requirements and partner with the procurement team to drive execution and develop strong supplier relationships. Qualifications (required): Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering, with a strong emphasis on systems design engineering principles and practices. 13+ years of technical experience in the design and analysis of aerospace systems, including system safety, reliability, verification, and integration, with a focus on applying advanced technical principles and theories 3+ years of experience leading a team and/or project in the aerospace industry, demonstrating the ability to set and own strategic initiatives and drive the progress of engineering design practices 9+ years of professional engineering experience encompassing the entire product life cycle, from pre-conceptual design through operations support, with an emphasis on systems architecture and design engineering and not limited to fluid systems Experience with aerospace aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles, particularly in the detailed design of complex systems and components, while also showing expertise in system safety, reliability, verification, and integration Working knowledge of materials and treatments relevant to aerospace systems Experience troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues related to aerospace systems Experience with hands-on prototyping and design, mockup design and evaluation, and engineering development units and test methods, demonstrating a systematic approach to design engineering Experience managing and working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects, while also providing technical leadership and mentoring to team members Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to serve as a spokesperson for advanced technical projects and programs Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion, while also acting independently with no oversight in technical decisions Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident
