U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Power Plant Electrician A in Selma, Alabama

Summary About the Position: The incumbent works under the supervision of the Power Plant Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent and receives technical direction when necessary from a Power Plant Senior Electrician who gives advice and instructions on special or complex features of the work. Works from drawings or sketches within prescribed standards and in compliance with operation and maintenance manuals, regulations, directives and various instruction manuals furnished by equipment manufacturers. Responsibilities The incumbent works under the general supervision of the designated supervisor who makes assignments in the form of work orders or sketches and provides any pertinent instruction with respect to coordination with other crafts or individuals. Performs work on own initiative and individually, or as a member of a crew, and is responsible for the quantity, quality, and timeliness of work in accordance with accepted trade practices and established procedures. Assumes responsibility for completion of tasks in a manner that will ensure incumbent’s safety and the safety of others. Must possess the skill to do diagnostic evaluation and troubleshooting of complex electrical equipment, control circuitry, and large power apparatus. Must have skill in the use complex test equipment to perform analysis and troubleshooting. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Power Plant Electrician A without more than normal supervision. 1) Conducts inspections on a routine and non-routine basis ascertaining that equipment is functioning properly and establishing needs for repair; 2) troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical equipment failures for necessary repairs and/or installation of equipment for the correction of outages and improper operation and 3) operates and tests equipment manually when it is dismantled and reassembled. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability To Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Knowledge of Electrical Equipment Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work tasks require that the incumbent be capable of rapid simultaneous mental and muscular coordination in conjunction with eye and hand coordination to operate switches and controls in accordance with meter indications. In order to perform the maintenance, inspection and operation of power station equipment the incumbent will lift, carry, and heave objects 45 pounds and over, climb and reach above the shoulders, stand, sit, crawl and kneel for prolonged periods of time and performs repeated bending. Operation of cranes, pickups and other motor vehicles is required. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in the project powerhouse, other structures, and outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to noise, extremes of heat or cold, dirt, oils, greases, dust, energized equipment, moving machinery, odors, and fumes. Works around and over water, in damp drafty areas, and at various heights. May work with a variety of toxic or caustic materials. There is a possibility of cuts, burns, falls, and electrical shock. The incumbent must wear all appropriate safety equipment and protective clothing, and successfully complete and maintain all occupational health requirements. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required.
