Summary

The Manager, Environmental Health & Safety will provide representation and oversight of all aspects of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) related to manufacturing, general office, R&D, AeroVironment services and third-party AeroVironment service providers for multiple sites. This role is accountable to ensure that all field techs, manufacturing employees, R&D representatives and office personnel are trained and maintain compliance with all pertinent global, federal, state and local EHS regulations. Includes the creation, preparation, modification and review of all policies, procedures, training, and regulatory report writing, submittals and responses. Other duties include the development and review of the health and Safety Plans, Risk Assessments and EHS site audits. This role will report to the Director of Security, Facilities & EHS.

Position Responsibilities

  • Interprets, recommends, process and practices which will ensure compliance with safety, health and environmental regulations and/or company policy

  • Identifies hazardous workplace conditions and takes preliminary samples and measurements of hazardous forces and toxic substances, remove hazards and/or protects employees by guarding, revising work procedures, and training or requiring use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment

  • Manage EHS team with development, publishing and training of safety and environmental programs consistent with regulations and company direction. Maintain AeroVironment’s EHS training matrix and ensure compliance

  • Assist with EHS Implementation Plans, Audits, Safe Work Procedures, and Risk Assessments

  • Manage all site level EHS committees and objectives

  • Monitor, update and ensure compliance AeroVironment's regulatory calendar for all sites

  • Must take effective steps to ensure that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal and state occupational safety and health standard provisions of any labor agreement, ensuring that all required records are prepared and maintained

  • Develops and implements environmental, health and safety management systems to integrate EHS into the business operations

  • Conduct ergonomic training and assessments for AeroVironment employees

  • Maintains compliance with 27 CFR Part 555 Commerce in explosives, Dod 4145.26-M DoD Contractor’s Safety Manual for Ammunition and Explosives, CCR Title 19 Chapter 10 Explosives, CCR Title 8 Section 5293 (Cal OSHA) and 49 CFR Parts 171-180 Hazardous waste Materials (DOT)

  • Update Manage all EHS assessment and regulatory compliance for new R&D projects, site modifications, production changes and the purchase of new equipment. Conduct multimedia audits of the facilities and recommend corrective actions and maintaining all records as required

  • Accident investigation to involve root cause analysis and follow up actions. Investigates and resolves issues, questions, or concerns received from within the company, among outside customers, regulatory agencies, etc.

  • This is a hands-on management position, the person selected must be able to work independently and manage a team, including performance management and staffing decisions.

  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of higher education and directly related work experience

  • 7 years of direct experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related field; including 3 years management experience

  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA and other related Federal, state and local regulations, auditing procedures, environmental compliance, and environmental safety & health programs

  • Experience with EHS management systems and programs

  • Experienced implementing and supporting various programs in all areas of Environmental Health & Safety

  • Proven ability to apply technical expertise to develop solutions for complex problems

  • Proven ability to work independently and manage a team

Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Must be able to develop and work with Microsoft office tools, SharePoint, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Other computer tracking tools will be needed to support the position

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, and programs as well as demonstrate effective prioritization and implementation skills

  • Ability to provide clear, concise, and effective verbal communications

  • Ability to plan, organize, delegate, and follow-up on work flow to meet departmental goals and objectives

  • Ability to provide hands on support to management team and implement/execute solutions.

  • Team player and flexible to the needs of the stakeholders in a dynamic environment

  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and decision-making skills; Ability to analyze problems and identify implementable solutions

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to develop and render concise reports, summaries and formal presentations

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands & arms.

  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch

  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus

Special Requirements

  • Ability to travel up to 15% within the Continental U.S.

The salary range for this role is:

$108,275 - $153,615
