Summary
Duke Energy is seeking a Nuclear Engineer III or a Senior Nuclear Engineer Electrical Engineer with Instrumentation & Control (I&C) experience for the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC. The nuclear industry provides generation with no emissions and is vital to the clean energy transformation. As such, this provides an exciting opportunity to leverage new technology.
The individual will perform design engineering work for electrical and I&C projects within the engineering organization. The I&C engineering work will include digital and software focused items. Current qualification at a nuclear utility as a Modification Engineer under an INPO Accredited Program and knowledge of Passport or Consolidated Asset Suite for design and work order development is highly desirable. Experience in Operations department is considered a desirable trait as well. Individual will be required to obtain qualifications for a Modification Engineer prior to working independently. Selected individual will function as the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects and in a support capacity on other project teams.
Responsibilities
Design package development, developing conceptual designs and specifications for bidding purposes, evaluating alternatives, technical support during implementation, setpoint development, coordination of design efforts with selected vendors/AEs/designer and conducting design package reviews.
Working knowledge or familiarity of cyber security regulations as mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is required as digital designs need to be cyber security compliant.
Design products related to major digital controls system replacements, software evaluations, instrument component upgrades, and control circuits are expected to be developed.
Qualify in the necessary duty areas to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for modifications within Duke Energy with past qualifications and product demonstration from other utilities being useful to accelerate this process.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Nuclear Engineer III
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 4 years related experience.
Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Senior Nuclear Engineer
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 6 years related experience.
Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer
Experience in digital hardware / software modifications
Digital / I&C engineering experience at Brunswick Nuclear Plant
Working knowledge of digital upgrade specific licensing requirements and current 10CFR73.54 Cyber Security Requirements
Experience developing digital / software modification test plans.
Experience in the 10CFR50.59 with respect to designing modifications to a nuclear facility.
Strong oral / written communication skills within a professional environment
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Must be able to work in a team environment.
Specific Requirements
Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
