Scot Forge Company Automation Engineer in Spring Grove, Illinois

Scot Forge is migrating into an area that will require the application of automated systems in additive manufacturing, testing, and laboratory grade robotic furnace tending. The position will require the ability to design and direct design on automated systems in the Scot Forge domain. This includes a deep understanding of existing system controls, such as heat treat, and other control driven systems and be fluent in their operational programming architecture. As the company expands its use of other systems the Automation Engineer will be responsible for merging these new systems into the Scot Forge inventory with controls consistent with existing architecture.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Electrical and Automation Design and Procurement

  • Completely understand and be able to troubleshoot existing systems that have automated control systems currently installed.

  • Research and develop for new processes and equipment.

  • Develop written specifications and budgets of new automation tools such as robots, co-bots, ASRS, and other systems that advance the Scot Forge automation footprint.

  • Quote and procure all new systems that align with written specifications and budgets with contract reviews, supplier selection, negotiation and ROI of automated systems and controls.

  • Buy-off of installed automated systems to the written specifications.

  • Designs meet or exceed respective codes: Analysis, validation, and diligence is performed to ensure quality of design with a priority on plant and personnel safety.

  • Research and review advanced sensing and the integration of these systems into the automation that is designed and developed.

  • Act as corporate Subject Matter Expert and, in some cases, oversee third party automation providers.

  • Provide direct intervention in all areas that require and/or request intervention.

  • Collaboration with the IT department to enable strong process implementation and certification and machine learning.

    Qualifications:

  • Must have 3-5 years minimum experience in a manufacturing engineering, production control, or project management role.

  • Must have Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent experience in technical/manufacturing field. Preferred engineering disciplines – (manufacturing, electrical, industrial, civil), operations, supply chain, or project management degree.

  • Preferred exposure to solid modeling methods (IE, Solidworks)

  • Ability to read and interpret complex industrial specifications and contracts

  • Advanced technical communication skills, both verbal and written are required.

  • Understands material specifications, costing, shop floor terminology, and manufacturing processes including CNC machining methods

  • Previous project management exposure including budget and schedule creation, project scoping, and team development along with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at a time.

  • Must demonstrate ability to perform in a highly collaborative team environment while being self-directed.

  • Proficient in MS Office.

  • Preferred experience in continuous improvement methods including process mapping, line balancing, Kaizen, and the creation of performance metrics.

  • Ability to work safely in a shop atmosphere.

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Balance of office and shop setting. Must be able to physically see the product and discern its level of completion.

  • Shop setting requires:

  • Exposure to all forms of working conditions such as elevated work of every type and close quarters/confined space, extreme heat, extreme cold, dust, debris, fumes, and noise.

  • Exposure to all forms of movement and physical demands such as heavy and light lifting, crawling, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, etc.

  • Exposure to safety hazards such as heights, uneven ground, confined space, noise, pressure vessels, suspended loads, heavy equipment, chemicals, cut hazards, asphyxiation, CO2, aldehydes, silica aluminum oxides, electrical shock and burns from hot product, combustion, and electrical hazards of up to 4160 volts.

  • PPE requirements above typical shop floor requirements including harnesses and arc flash gear.
