National Park Service Visitor Services Assistant (Angels Landing) in Springdale, Utah

Summary These Visitor Services Assistant positions are located at Zion National Park in Springdale, UT. The selected individuals will work on an important pilot program to manage visitor use and experience on Angels Landing, a highly visited and remote trail area within Zion National Park. This is a TERM position with an initial appointment of 13 months that may be extended up to a total of two years, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. Responsibilities The selected individuals will work on an important pilot program to manage visitor use and experience on Angels Landing, a highly visited and remote trail area within Zion National Park. MAJOR DUTIES: Perform permit compliance checks, visitor contacts, and monitoring in a remote field-based location. Strong hiking and backpacking skills are necessary to reach remote field location where work is to be completed, and can only be reached by foot, requiring individuals to hike steep and uneven terrain with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet within 2 miles while carrying weight up to 45 lbs. Standing and walking for long periods of time while conducting a high volume of visitor transactions. Frequent bending, lifting of heavy items and some sedentary work is required. Assist in field level implementation of pilot program for day-use permits on Angels Landing trail by checking permits and monitoring visitor use at remote field-based visitor contact station. Utilize the new Rec.gov permitting system, being part of the team charged with the overall success of this developmental program. Provide outstanding customer service by assisting visitors from around the world in making educated choices during their visit. Provide public orientation and explanations of current park events, resource management projects, management policies, and legislatives updates affecting the park area. Serve as a deterrent to infractions of park resource regulations by your presence and willingness to initiate resource-related conversation with visitors. Physical Demands: Work may require standing or sitting for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, traversing uneven terrain, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, & repetitive nature of some tasks. Working Conditions: Work performed in a remote field-based location. Work is primarily in an outdoor setting where you may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, steep and uneven terrain, and/or other hazards such as heavy vehicle traffic. Approximately 90% of the job will be working in the field at a contact point checking and documenting permits. This position may also spend roughly 10% of their time answering an information telephone line and assisting visitors with the online reservation system and travel planning. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. DIRECT DEPOSIT: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. DRIVER'S LICENSE: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. TRIAL PERIOD: You will be required to complete a one-year trial period. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate (1) the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, (2) starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and (3) the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of Specialized Experience: Providing information or assistance to the public in a business, recreation, or outdoor setting; Working in a public facing office while providing customer service and office support work; Instructing groups of people or individuals; Compiling and analyzing information to prepare reports; Experience using software programs such as word processing, spreadsheet, or database (e.g., Excel, Access, Word, or similar) systems. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. You must include a copy of your transcripts with your application materials. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, I have six months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and three years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) that equals 100% of the total requirement. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to one year of specialized experience. You must include a copy of your transcripts with your application materials. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. Due to the desirable nature of the area surrounding Zion National Park, please be sure to research and understand the limited housing options and the area's cost-of-living. Park/Government housing is not available for this position. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.
