The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of Facility Maintenance Mechanic. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, skilled and administrative work in maintaining the electrical, plumbing and other general construction or repair work of a City-owned facility or maintained property.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.
On call rotation for 2 weeks for City owned facilities.
Makes repairs to and keeps in proper condition buildings and structures including, carpentry and masonry work on the interiors and exteriors of and approaches to such structures.
Repairs and replaces all plumbing fixtures; restocks restrooms; performs painting.
Maintains and repairs lighting fixtures in City owned buildings.
Moves and installs new or existing computer lines and phone lines, moves or installs new outlets and switches.
Moves and assembles office Repairs all closet fixtures.
Repairs, orders new, replaces and changes locks, lock cores, etc.
Repairs or remodels recess computer terminals (if not extensive).
Unloads trucks, supplies for Maintenance and supplies for Police; Picks up purchases made by Administration.
Responsible for tools in maintenance shop for maintenance usage; Orders parts and supplies for repairs.
Maintains and replaces parking blocks, picks up parking lot and yard, m aintains and replaces flags.
Mops floors cleans restrooms and locker rooms, spot cleans carpets.
Replaces ceiling tiles, cleans light diffusers and air vents and returns, cleans and replaces air filters.
May operate and service motors, fans, pumps, heat exchanges and other related mechanical equipment.
Create work order and completion of same; Make requests for purchases as required.
Responsible for call outs and onsite contractors.
Assists at other City owned buildings and properties when needed; assists the public when asked.
Obtains bids from contractors for maintenance and repair contracts.
Coordinates with Administration regarding maintenance and repair contracts.
Obtains necessary documents from contractors related to maintenance and repair contracts.
Removes snow from parking lots and sidewalks and spreads salt, calcium, sand, and ice melt at Police facilities.
Maintain small water source heat pump/HVAC units throughout the building.
Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
May serve on various committees.
Performs related duties as needed.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Vocational/Trade School, preferably in HVAC.
Three (3) years specialized training in general construction, rehabilitation or building maintenance and construction projects, including both major and minor alterations.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.
Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.

Ability to exert mildly heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 150 pounds.
Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to construction site environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, machinery, traffic hazards, wetness and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
