What You'll Be Doing

Job Scope: Generally responsible for performing all aspects for complete designs of process engineering assignments. This work will be performed under general supervision.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Leads the process design effort on capital projects. Individual projects range from $100K to $5MM. Early phase work loading will range from $1MM to $25MM. Total portfolio (including DD and construction) expected range from $5 to $35MM.

  • Works with project owners as well as SME (subject matter expects) and design personnel to develop options, assess them based on HSE, economics, reliability, etc. to finalize recommended scope.

  • Ensures safe and environmentally responsible project design on assigned projects by participating in cross-functional project teams to address HSE requirements including Process Risk Assessment (PRA) assistance. Resolve process questions during hazard studies, detailed mechanical design, and start-up of new or modified plant.

  • Performs front end process calculations used to develop innovative and cost-effective designs thus producing quality process deliverables that will identify risk and minimize rework in detailed design through start-up.

  • Performs process critical relief system evaluation including identification of applicable sizing cases, initial sizing calculations, specification development, IFC/start-up follow-up calculations, and maintenance of documentation for moderate designs.

  • Lead projects in the front end loading (FEL) process design for capital projects for both Active Ingredients (AI) and Form Fill & Pack (FF&P) business units.

  • Point of contact and manager of PTAI CPPE services for assigned unit.

  • Perform process evaluations in response to challenges or opportunities faced by the business which includes the development of innovative solutions to improve the safety, efficiency, or expand capacity. Project efforts could include both existing and new products and will include significant retrofit design.

  • Drive process design solutions and ensure safe, economical, and reliable operation of the completed project (plant) through networking of both internal and external resources.

  • Provide front end process designs including P&IDs, process description, control philosophy, equipment/instrumentation/relief valve specifications, line lists, and other process data necessary to enable successful (minimization of rework) detailed project design and construction.

  • Provide process critical relief system calculations to support site relief program.

Ideal Background

Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university is required.

Registration: Professional Engineering registration or CPIP certification is highly preferred.

Experience: This position requires 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in chemical, petroleum, or biochemical process design engineering.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Promotes the culture of working safely and applying safety related concepts into process design.

  • Basic knowledge of chemical/biochemical process engineering and chemical/biochemical process computer programs.

  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details of equipment, instrumentation, and piping.

  • Ability to create accurate process engineering documents from the information provided in vendor equipment data and drawings.

  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform process engineering and design functions.

  • Working knowledge of CAD software preferred, either AutoCAD or Microstation (or both).

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Working knowledge in the use of hydraulic simulation software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, PIPEPHASE, PIPE-FLO, and/or SiNet.

  • Working knowledge in the use of process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, PRO/II, DYNSIM, HYSYS, CHEMCAD, WinGEMS, ProMax, etc.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Virtual team skills and cross divisional relationships are developed and able to provide interoffice execution support with general supervision.

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
