Job Information

Mechanic

Duties:

Maintains the fleet of heavy-duty trucks, tractors, loaders, excavators, Gradalls and graders.
Performs maintenance on vehicles at all of the Road Department garages.
Operates motor vehicles and various attachments, such as mounted plows, body mounted spreader, tanks, distributors, and trailers of various sizes and shapes.
Handles specialized equipment, including front-end loaders, backhoes, tractor mowers, brush chippers, rollers, bucket trucks, distributors, patch trucks, etc.
Repairs diesel engines.
Troubleshoots and locates problems in hydraulic systems and corrects the issue as necessary.
Analyzes and corrects electrical issues as defined to a heavy-duty piece of equipment.
Inspects and performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including to servicing equipment, changing tires and oil and other lubricants.
Uses electronic diagnostic programs to find engine problems and to monitor maintenance schedule of equipment.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience as a diesel mechanic.

Special Requirements:

Must maintain a valid driver's license with no restrictions for nighttime driving.
Must have and maintain a Class-A Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an N or X tank endorsement and appropriate medical card.
Employee will be subject to call-in during off duty hours as dictated by weather conditions.
Must be available to work shifts exceeding 8 hours as assigned.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

The physical ability to manually lift and carry up to 80 pounds is essential to successful performance of job duties.
Must be able to maintain an electronic record of daily work and repair orders by specific pieces of equipment.
