The Division of Ecological and Water Resources is seeking to hire a permanent full-time Drilling and Survey Assistant located in Saint Paul. This position performs technical work on the Ecological and Water Resources well drilling crew and survey crew to aid in the collection and processing of sound hydrologic, geologic, and land survey data to support science-based water resources management decision-making.
Responsibilities:
To support the operation and maintenance of DNR Ecological and Water Resources’ stream, lake and ground water data collection programs so that sound data is available for water resources management planning and problem solving
To assist in the organization, compilation and management of DNR Ecological and Water Resources’ water monitoring data so that data are easily retrievable.
To perform other assigned tasks so that priority technical support services are delivered professionally.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to acquire a class A or B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment.
Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member and consistently conduct oneself in a cooperative and courteous manner.
Ability to exercise good independent judgment in determining the most efficient method of completing requested fieldwork or office tasks.
Good communication skills and human relation skills.
Ability to complete job duties during all four seasons and in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
Ability to safely operate and perform routine maintenance and repairs on augers, outboard motors, snowmobiles, ATVs, pumps, generators, power and hand tools and other equipment/tools as assigned.
Ability to safely operate and maintain medium motorized equipment including hauling heavy/tandem trailers and backing and maneuvering in awkward locations.
Personal skills to work independently and solve problems in remote locations.
Ability to document field activities with clear detailed note taking following written protocols.
Knowledge of standard computer software programs for word processing, spreadsheets and databases sufficient to create and modify them.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to complete tasks in the absence of the Drilling and Survey Hydrologist Supervisor, write clear and detailed notes, communicate clearly, and interact positively with private landowners and others.
Experience installing and maintaining hydrologic monitoring equipment.
Experience with determining elevations and/or land surveying.
Current Class A or B (Commercial) Driver's License.
Experience with drilling equipment or constructing and installing groundwater wells.
Experience using welding equipment.
Familiarity with State of Minnesota Well Code.
Experience with data entry and quality control.
Additional Requirements
This position requires current possession of a valid Class A or B license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment. The selected applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen and will be included in the ongoing DNR random drug and alcohol test program.
