Judicial Branch of the Virgin Islands Staff Attorney in St Thomas, Virgin Islands

NATURE OF WORK: The Staff Attorney provides substantive legal analysis, advice and assistance on cases pending before the Court and on other court-related legal issues and serves under the direction of the Presiding Judge. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Not All Inclusive - Assists the Presiding Judge with case management, assessments and preparations, including appellate reviews and administrative functions. - Assists the Clerk of Court (including the clerks office) with research and resolution of legal issues. - Conducts legal research onspecific legal questions and on issues that form the basis for the disposition of cases or motions. - Draftslegal memoranda, opinions and orders for consideration and signature, and make oral and written recommendations for judges consideration. - Assists with interpretation and implementation of legislation. - Monitors proposed legislation that affects the judicial system and provide appropriate legal analysis. - May mediate matters as assigned. - Collaborates internally and externally as needed regarding court operations. - Screens cases for jurisdictional defects, the difficulty of the case and the necessity for hearings. - Reviews and summarizes briefs and trial court records. - Submits cases with proposed dispositions within timeframes established by the Court. - Attends meetings, conferences and other trainings as required. - Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, abilities and skills listed above. An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is: Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a juris doctorate degree; supplemented with a minimum of two (2) years experience in the practice of law, legal research, or legal administration.
