SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

Anchored in the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute and the Office of the Dean of Research, the new Knight Initiative in Brain Resilience is a cross-disciplinary scientific endeavor aimed at addressing neurodegeneration, aging and brain resilience. Diseases and associated issues of cognitive decline like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia, and related ailments are increasing with our rapidly aging global population. Stanford seeks to advance a new era of brain science focused on accelerating the fundamental understanding of the aging brain, both the biological causes of neurodegeneration and how to increase brain resilience throughout the lifespan. POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated Life Sciences Research Professional with a focus on genomics or proteomics to join our team. The successful candidate will have a strong background in a life science discipline, with experience in conducting experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results. The research project that this individual will be involved in is focused on brain aging and resilience.

This position is a two-year fixed-term appointment, with possibility of renewal based on programmatic need and funding availability, with a primary work site on Stanford University’s main campus.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in the lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.

  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.

  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.

  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.

  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

  • Strong knowledge of proteomics techniques and technologies, such as mass spectrometry, protein separation, and identification methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in a life science discipline, such as biology, biochemistry, or genetics, with a focus on genomics or proteomics.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a research lab setting, with a focus on proteomics.

  • Experience with software and databases used in genomics or proteomics research.

  • Experience in sample preparation techniques, such as RNA, DNA or protein isolation and purification, and experience in molecule quantification techniques.

  • Familiarity with RNA and protein function, and experience in bioinformatics analysis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.

  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to Allergens/Biohazards/Chemicals, confined spaces, unusual work hours or routine overtime and/or inclement weather.

The expected pay range for this position is $26.44 to $36.54 per hour.
